By Himakiran Kumar "You see things; and you say ... (chennai, Tamil Nadu, India) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Emergence (Paperback)
firstly i should confess it came as a shock to me that a fine book such as this which cost me a whole night and which i could not put down till i turned the last page had no customer review on amazon of all places after all these years. My over imaginative mind suggests a global conspiracy to keep the masses away from this type of book by a real life Thomas Tye who is about to take over the world. But enough of diversions , let me dive straight into the review.
This is a book about how a mega corporation a la Microsoft only a 100 times bigger and more powerful comes to dominate all the industries and makes all kind of products that it has a scary power of sorts over the common man so much so that even big governments cannot take a swipe at it. Think of Google today if Google were to start making your medicines sell you grocery , insurance take care of your finances , run your telecommunications set up and so on and so forth. And add to this a solitary man on top of this organization with not exactly a normal past.. Now mix to this concoction doses of high technology where the internet as we know of it today is replaced by a global net for lack of a better word that connects not just computers but everything in this world . Imagine your washing machine, fridge tv , the electrical sockets in your home all connected to this global net which of course is powered and managed by the Tye corporation subsidiaries.. And then a run away Artificial intelligence experiment conducted on the global net that threatens to risk emergence of consciousness in the global net. As the title on the book puts it .. Only Thomas Tye can risk emergence.. Far fetched though the plot seems to an average person, people who are in the know would comfortably extrapolate the current world to the world of Thomas Tye. Central to the whole book is the question " Can we trust our lives and survival to a 'for profit mega corporation' and trust in its ability to solve all the world's ills ? Or should we not allow any business to expand its reach so much that it starts to control the very lives of the people. What should the governments do ? Keep a mole like the FBI lady in Thomas Tye's personal circle to keep a close watch on his agenda and then nab him when the govt feels he is getting out of control ? Should no business person become so powerful to hang up on the president of the US. Everyone should read this book because it shows exactly how we the masses can unwittingly and unknowingly hand over our lives to big business and how powerful one individual can become thanks to today's technology that he can take decisions that may affect the survival of humanity as a whole. I would not like to go into the plot here because that would take up too much space and i have already inserted some spoilers in the text above. This book takes the present day world as it is, extrapolates it to the near future and raises a host of questions in every sphere of life .. be it Big Business , Government , Privacy issues , Global Climate Change, Journalism .. Questions i feel that each one of us has a right to ponder over because the answers to these questions will ultimately decide the future of our and our forthcoming generations of humanity. |
