Editorial Reviews

You've got to wonder what kind of musician would even think to take a 19-piece band into the studio and out on the road, especially with the nation's current economic condition. That kind of musician would be Roy Hargrove, the veteran Jazz trumpeter and composer who is releasing his first big band album, Emergence. For Hargrove, whose previous release, 2008's quintet session Earfood, found its way into dozens of Jazz critics' year-end Top 10 lists, recording Emergence was not some crazy impulse decision but rather the realization of a dream. The 11-track Emergence documents the present state of the Roy Hargrove Big Band's ongoing evolution. Emergence was recorded at Capitol Studios in Hollywood with Hargrove and his manager Larry Clothier producing and the multi-Grammy winner Al Schmitt engineering and mixing.

Fantastic! The best big band album I've heard in years on every level: performance, recording, and an eclectic selection of tunes ranging from a haunting, almost dark rendition of "My Funny Valentine" to a couple of Cuban band pieces that almost got me in trouble driving north on the 405 at one in the morning! The band is so tight, I thought Basie's band had been reincarnated! I purchased this album for a couple of other big band fans I know and it knocked their socks off! Buy this album now and crank it up! Roy Hargrove made me proud to be an American again. Thanks bro! Would love to see these guys live!

This is one of the best big band records I heard. And the sound is really great, Roy is a trumpet virtuoso and he could mix streigtahead jazz and latin perfectly, Roberta Gambarini did it great. Please don't confuse this band with the Dizzy Gilespie Bid Band in which Roy and Roberta played but this band in my opinion sounds better, highly recomended.

Only Roy Hargrove would dare to drop a big band album during a recession. This had to be a huge financial undertaking. This is a great album. One of his best releases in years. Can you say Grammy?

this is a good example of the sound of the big band era. and is recommended for those who want to reminisce or the younger crowd to learn what it was all about and realize what they missed

Roy Hargrove was born for two albums - Habana and Emergence. Hard to believe he pulled it off. Big Band in 2010? Another group of musicians waxing nostalgic for another era? Not here. There are but a handful of musicians that can make jazz speak to us now - relevant music for today's music lover. This CD is simply a must have for any jazz afficianado. Call the Grammys now and tell them to put Hargrove's name on about 8 trophies from composer to arranger to jazz group to best album. If this CD doesn't get a grammy, the Grammy academy is worthless. Oh, and Mr. Hargrove . . . Thank God indeed! That's how you started your acknowledgements and that's how I'll end this review - Thank God for Roy Hargrove's talent, discipline, and sense of obligation to the gifts he's been given. Run don't walk . . . . for one of the finest albums of the decade.
