Book Description

September 28, 2000
For those who love animals comes this riveting account of an extraordinary, dedicated team of more than 3,500 trained volunteers. EARS (Emergency Animal Rescue Service) takes on the task that the Red Cross and other human-focused organizations simply can't: helping animals survive natural and man-made disasters. You will be moved by the courageous, poignant, and at times humorous stories, including:

• The desperate search by a 14-year-old girl to locate her missing cats
• Libby, the dog who was rescued from Texas oil fields and is now the official taste-tester at a dog bakery in California
• How a hoist saved a cow from raging Texas floodwaters
• The resourceful skunk who found his safe haven in a portable toilet
• How Bumpus, the fantastic, fearless feline, survived disfiguring burns and became a hero
• Plus many more!

The wrath of nature in the form of fire, flood, hurricane, or earthquake takes an enormous toll on animals as well as people. But, while there has long been help to save humans, there wasn't anyone who focused on helping the animals. This is why EARS—Emergency Animal Rescue Service—came into being. Inside are the real-life stories of EARS volunteers, and how their efforts have saved countless animals from certain death. You will read about the touching reunions of pet owners with the cherished pets they feared were dead. You will appreciate the wonderful service that EARS and its thousands of volunteers provide to all of us with their rescue efforts. Most of all these stories will make you laugh, cry, and marvel at the deep connection humans and animals share.

These and other stories are sure to inspire and thrill as well as make you appreciate the wonderful bond that exists between animals and the special people who care enough to save them.

More About the Author

Terri Crisp has volunteered and worked in the animal welfare movement since 1983. The majority of this time has been spent managing animals during natural disasters. "My first rescue was a puppy during a flood. He was chained to a car, dog paddling to stay alive in five feet of water. When he was saved from a certain death and tucked safely under my raincoat, I knew the course of my life had just changed." Since that fateful day, Terri has trained and managed volunteers to respond to the needs of animals during 71 major disasters in the United States, Canada, Japan, Poland, Romania and Sri Lanka.

On September 11, 2007, Terri's life took another unexpected turn. It began with an email sent to SPCA International from a soldier serving in Iraq, desperate to get the dog he befriended during his tour of duty to the United States. Terri's years of experience overcoming what always seemed like insurmountbale challenges, is what lead her boss at SPCA International to ask her to see if there was any way to overcame some enormous obstacles to save Charlie. Braving the dangers of a country at war and a culture that views dogs and cats as inner city slum dwellers view rats, Terri has repeatedly traveled to Iraq and saved not only Charlie, but 350 other dogs and cats - plus one donkey. From this first rescue grew Operation Baghdad Pups which continues today so those serving in Iraq can keep their promise to not leave their four-legged buddy behind on the battlefield. To learn more about Operation Baghdad Pups visit the SPCA International website at www.spcai.org.

The accumulation of experiences that Terri has had while saving animals led her to write two books, Out of Harm's Way and Emergency Animal Rescue Stories. Both books include heartwarming and sometimes heart breaking stories from such disasters as the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, Hurricane Andrew and the 1993 floods in the Mid West.

Terri's selfless work has been an inspiration to many who have found their own way to make this a better world for animals too. A born crusader for the animals, Terri down plays the recognition she has received through the years. "The only acknowledgments I need are the ones like I got from that first puppy I saved when he reached up and gave me a grateful lick on my face once he knew he was safe."

5.0 out of 5 stars All About What Really Matters- Animal Rescue, May 6, 2004
By
Amanda (Oklahoma City, OK) - See all my reviews
While this book might not contain as many fuzzy, feel-good, heartstring-tuggers as Crisp's earlier book, Out of Harm's Way, I think her second effort measures up just as well to her first. This book features stories from disasters that didn't generate as much press and also focuses on the nitty gritty of animal rescue work- she describes some of the dangers, the politics, the risks, and the disappointments. The book isn't intended to be a bunny-hugging Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul- it serves as an eye-opening introduction to the difficult but ultimately satisfying world of animal rescue, written by a true trailblazer in the field. Recommended (and inspiring) reading for anyone considering volunteering for EARS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book Brings It all Home, May 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Emergency Animal Rescue Stories: True Stories About People Dedicated to Saving Animals from Disasters (Hardcover)
What great reading for the animal lover! This book gave me a feel for what it's like to work in a real disaster and what goes on behind the scenes. It made me realize what hard work animal rescue can be and made me appreciate the people that devote their lives in this way. There were times I laughed out loud and times that I wish someone had warned me to get a Kleenex! I thought this book was a great follow-up to Crisp's other book, "Out of Harm's Way" because it shows disasters that were not necessarily as "media-worthy" but still just as important to the lives saved and impacted. It shows that not only is Terri a true asset to animals, but also to the people that care for and love them. I highly recommend both books and anxiously await a third from Terri Crisp!
