There are a few gizmos that perform similar tasks to this. I knew I was taking a chance by buying this without reading any reviews. I have to say that it lives up to my expectations. It was able to charge a blackberry and an iPhone 4s. I tested it
by draining the power of the iPhone until it shut itself down. I charged the Dynamo via usb to computer to full. Plugged it up to the Iphone and sure enough, it charged it until it powered up on it's own just like normal charging. I am very pleased because this was probably my main purpose for purchasing. So when you charge the Dynamo by USB, there is no need to crank. But rest assured, the cranking works. I didn't give it all 5 stars because if you rely only on cranking, sometimes it can get moody and certain functions won't work the way you want. Like if you crank only for like a minute, maybe two, than the light will work and so will the radio. But I advise you to use only one function at a time after cranking. If you usb charge it, the iPhone was able to charge up to at least 7% which is more than enough for a few emergency calls. I haven't tested the solar power or the waterproof claim but for this price, I think it sets itself apart.

I tested this out and the flashlight never seemed to run out of power. No matter how much I tried to run down the internal battery, it kept on going, I stopped after about 45 minutes. The radio will stay on for several minutes (maybe 5) after you crank it for a minute. I tried running the radio only on solar power, but it wasn't sunny enough to do that. I did verify that it does charge in the sunlight. The real test was if I could run a dead cell phone. I ran down the internal battery, then hooked it up to a power hungry HTC smartphone with a dead battery. By cranking for 3-4 minutes, I was able to get the cell phone up and make an outgoing call. The device comes with several USB type connectors - it did not come with the wide Apple phone connector and I don't have an iPhone, so I'm not sure about the connecivity to that device.

The fact that I can use this to charge my iPhone 5 (via usb charger) was my main reason for purchasing this product. From my limited testing, 1min of cranking gets about 3% of the battery -- pretty good, all things considered! UPDATE BELOW--turns out this first test was a bit optimistic.

I didn't expect much from the solar, and it seems that was correct. I let it sit on my windowsill for three days, which usually charges my SOLIO Classic (the SOLIO has about 3x as many solar panels) but when I plugged in my iPhone it started charging but then switched to "charging not supported". So don't bank on just using solar to charge your iPhone.

I'm giving 4 stars for two reasons:
1 - when I first went to spin the crank, it felt like it was stuck and that if I pushed, it might break. I was able to rock the crank back and forth a few times and then it started spinning freely.
2 - the USB charger adapter isn't great. it has a discernible "wiggle" when I insert my Lightning cable. Works well enough, but this component feels a bit cheap.

UPDATE! I put this charger to the test over the course of one evening and found that it does NOT work well as an iPhone charger.* Here's the video:
[...]
Because of this, I'm downgrading this product to 3 stars.

* I'm still in the process of testing this device, and I'll update it soon. I full-charged it via USB, and I'm leaving it set in my window to charge/drain from solar. My hunch is that it'll hold a charge with just solar, but after draining the battery, it's very difficult to re-charge with the crank alone.

I recently spent $50 on an eton scorpion which is similar and also a great product, but given that I only spent about $20 on the HY-88 I am thrilled with the quality of this device. I charged it completely by usb just to test it and it charged up my iphone by 5%. definitely enough for an emergency call or two, and I didn't have to sit and crank while charging my iphone because it just dumped the battery charge for me (the eton scorpion does NOT have this feature- must hand crank while charging a cell phone even if the device itself is charged). The HY-88 does not have weather band radio, but it gets perfect FM reception and has a decently loud volume for such a small device. Flashlight is also very good. I'm glad it comes with some cords for cell charging, as I'm giving it as a gift to someone else. I will definitely be buying another one to keep for myself, as well as some for gifts to loved ones.

It’s a cool little gadget; I put it in the window and turn the crank all the time. The radio and flashlight work well, but when I try to charge my phone there’s not enough power to bring it out of the red “flashing battery” mode. This was a huge disappointment for me because I wanted to use it to charge my IPod on the airplane so I could watch movies or read books. It seems to only give enough charge to make an emergency 1 minute phone call before the phone dies again.

Its the most basic of backup but when you are out of power and no radio or flashlight and no way to charge your cellphone, this is the answer. I wasn't expecting much and was very pleasantly surprised. Its sturdy and has good reception and has all the charger adaptors, and it works!!
