Very few groups achieved the level of elegance, taste, and power that these legends exhibited on their 1985 record. There is a sense of freshness and sheer beauty in the voice of J.T.Taylor,weonderfully showcased by by the funky and, sometimes, jazzy orchestrations.Every track on this album means business, setting a standard for the genre.

This CD can satisfy hip-hoppers, disco bunnies, soul freaks, and even some easy listening fans and rock n rollers like myself. These seven songs have a driving beat, funky rhythms, some good lyrics, and loads of energy. Its just so Fresh man. My only issue is that there are just seven tracks here. Why couldn't the guys add on another track or two. Allright the last song goes on a little too long but if you are dancing up a storm are you really going to notice? Don't be Misled, pick this one up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oldschool4ever, February 18, 2006

This is by far one of the best Kool and the Gang albums. It includes four Top 20 hits(Fresh, Misled, Cherish, and Emergency)that will always be remembered. JT Taylor was truly the voice of the band that was able to take it to the next step. "Fresh" is one of those upbeat jams that you will get you hooked from the very beginning. "Cherish" and "Bad Woman" are timeless slow jams and "Misled" is a catchy Rock/RnB dance groove. I highly recommend this album to all the fans of the best music era.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare and delightful find, September 22, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I was so lucky to have come across this album on Amazon. I'd been seaching for the song "Bad Woman" on music sharing sites for a while and never got a hit. I think this album along with Kool and the Gangs "Straight from the Heart" are some of the best things they ever released. Both albums have a 80's feel to it, showing how much the band had changed from the funky 70's- not that there was anything wrong with that music I love Jungle Boogie, Open Sesame and the best Summer Madness- But after J.T. took over the lead voacals the bands style changed I guess with the times. At any rate after the iconic "Ladies Night" it was a span of 10 years and a lot of great music. I want to thank Amazon for collecting and making available this and other old school bands for collecters like me

4.0 out of 5 stars It's too fresh!!, February 6, 2006
This review is from: Emergency (Audio CD)
My father bought this in 1984 and it was worth his money. A blend of serious Rock/Pop/R&B makes one of the most superb albums of 1984-85. Side 1 is the singles side with a glorifying beginning, middle, and end.

1)The title track is an electrifying Rock & Roll groundbreaker with its catchy lyrics that is a must for parties. Although the single got played on the billboard charts, it enjoyed greater success on the R&B charts (#6) in the summer of 85.

2)Fresh is the smooth pop/funk mid-1980s signature single (pop #3 and R&B #1) that is also magic, musically and definitely literally (see the video with the Cinderella story featuring supermodel Iman).

3)Misled (like Emergency, but more memorable) was the estatic rock/R&B number that picked up from where Beat It left off (pop #10/R&B #3). The accompanying video was a mildly horrific, yet great storyline simular to MJ's Thriller and Billy Ocean's Loverboy.

4)The lp side closer, Cherish was a enduring slow jammer that became the lp's most successful popper (#2, yet #1 R&B). The video featured the gang on the set of Jones beach playing by a nightly fire place. I am loyal to the original version, not the watered down 12 inch promotional version (1 minute longer and music was uneven) that is featured on The Best Of 1979-1987.

5)Surrender (side B's opener) was not too bad, but it seemed like a continuation of Fresh, but only speeding up the tempo a bit. It faired to be a bit more than the mediocre level.

I do not recall the last 2 tracks very well (maybe my father barely played side B), but I heard in other reviews that they were'nt that hot. Although this is not the best K&TG lp, this is one of the best of 1984-1985's R&B lps with hot singles. 4 stars!!!
