5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference for novice and experienced RNs
Sheehy's Emergency Nursing is a must for any emergency nurse. I have used this book (current and previous editions) in my emergency nursing orientation program for over 12 years. It is an excellent resource for emergency nurses from novice to expert. While there are plenty of other texts available, only Sheehy's gets my vote of confidence.

As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, I use this text book to teach my 6-week Emergency Nursing Course since it is the official text-book of the Emergency Nurses Association. The book does a nice job in covering the essence of emergency nursing practice, however, there are some important weaknesses that should be considered when using this text book. Much of the content is quite superficial and lacks in-depth rationale for adequate patient care. An example of this is it's coverage of stroke, cardiovascular emergencies, triage and pediatric care. I found it necessary to supplement these areas with additional materials. Another weakness was the reference system used in the appendix. I found it very difficult to locate items; either they were entirely missing or they were not cross-referenced adequately, making navigation a cumbersome process. An example of this is the mnemonic RATS for wound care. It was not referenced in the appendix, nor was it found in the minor wound section--it was finally located in the maxillofacial trauma section--a place where I would not likely look first. Hope this helps.
