PreSchool-Grade 2 Pleasant watercolors illustrate this reassuring story of a trip to the emergency room. When a little boy sprains his ankle, his parents take him to the hospital. There he rides in a wheelchair, has an X-ray, gets a cast and goes home on crutches. He explains some of the sights along the way, including IV bottles, stretchers and butterfly bandages. Pictures are clear and show details not mentioned in the simple text, such as the protective lead apron used for X-rays. Smiling doctors and nurses and uncluttered hallways lend a cheerful, relaxed air to the surroundings. Obviously this is not a realistic picture of a busy emergency room. There is no apparent confusion, noise or blood. However, the book does present a comfortable introduction to a potentially frightening place, and it does mention the equipment children are most likely to encounter. Other titles, such as Ingrid Elliot's Hospital Roadmap (Resources for Children in Hospitals, 1982) and The Hospital Book (Crown, 1981) by James Howe are more detailed, but they are aimed at a hospital stay rather than an outpatient visit.
