Dr. Browning's Emergentics is an excellent resource for those who have an understanding of Emotional Intelligence (Goleman) and seek a way to expand their recourses. As a strong proponent of EQ, I found Emergentics to be a very good complement to EQ. The Gallup organization's Clifton Strength Finders® is also a detailed profile of 34 themes in order of dominance that are used to identify the most prevalent human talents -- the building blocks of a strong and productive personal and professional life.

The Theory of Emergentics combines the early understanding of psychology (BF Skinner and Watson) with today's most recent findings. Dr. Browning's work in Emergentics suggests a combination of our genetic tendencies to think a certain way (nature) with our ways that have been modified due to socialization (nurtured). Early into this well written textbook, you will better understand that individuals have inborn traits to act and think in certain ways and that these traits are modified by their surroundings. It is the modification of genetic traits with life experience that define and provide recognizable personality profiles.

Emergentics is profiling using four Thinking Attributes - Analytical Thinking, Structural Thinking, Social Thinking and Conceptual Thinking. These thinking attributes are more defined with the measurement of three Behavioral Attributes - Expressiveness, Assertiveness, and Flexibility. This textbook helps you to clearly understand these seven attributes and how they interact together and define a personality profile.

If you are a administrator, team leader, HR professional or educator, there are many professional groups that offer seminars in Emergentics. Also, Dr. Browning offers (for a charge) an online questionnaire for those who would like their own profile. http://www.emergenetics.com

Who you are today is a result of certain characteristics that have EMERGED from your life experiences, plus the GENETICS with which you were born. Geil Browning calls this interplay between nurture and nature EMERGENETICS.

I have had the privilege of working with Geil Browning, and she is beyond extraordinary. Geil has the highest academic standards, so everthing in this book has been analyzed, cross-checked, and verified. However, what drives the book is Geil's wisdom, empathy, and passion to share what she has learned over a lifetime of scientific study, corporate consulting, and human observation.

EMERGENETICS is all about understanding yourself and other people, so this book will help you become not only a better business leader, but also a better human being. It really does give you the keys you need to decipher others and better appreciate your own strengths.

EMERGENETICS is based on seven personality attributes. Each thinking or behavioral attribute is given a spectrum, so your unique personality is a function of where you place yourself on all seven spectrums. You can access all seven traits to different degrees when you have to, but you'll keep coming back to your natural "set point" for each attribute. You can use this book to determine your thinking and behavioral attributes in a general way, or you can go to www.emergenetics.com and fill out a full questionnaire to get a complete, individualized Emergenetics Profile (for a fee).

EMERGENETICS explains how the seven attributes correlate with the latest brain research. As Geil goes along explaining her life's work, her subjects include things like neuropeptide research, the enteric nervous system, brain fitness, gender differences, guidelines for communicating with people who aren't like you, and getting the most of of your colleagues and employees. This is a "business" book with something for everyone.

Geil Browning is the real deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Insightful! There would be less misunderstandings in the world if everyone knew everyone else's profile!, March 19, 2006
This review is from: Emergenetics (R): Tap Into the New Science of Success (Paperback)
I found this book very interesting. It is about what the author describes as the 4 thinking attributes (Social, Conceptual, Analytical and Structural) and 3 behavioral attributes (Expressiveness, Assertivess and Flexibility), how to identify attributes in people and yourself, how you can interact with others based on others attributes, how to make better decisions and how to create and work in great teams (among other things).

One of the cool things is that Dr. Browning eats her own dog food in that she applies what she is preaching in the way she wrote the book. For the analytical, there are explanations of brain activity and the science behind her findings. For the social, throughout the book, she explains how emergenetics can be beneficial to personal relationships. For the conceptual, there are colorful pictures of the different attributes that give readers the big picture and a quick glimpse of what emergenetics is about.

Another thing that I liked about the book was that I learned a good amount of information about the brain and how it works that I did not know before. The quotes sprinkled throughout the book were also interesting and timely.

This is another book to add to my aspiring WE (Whole Emergenetics) organizations' libraries. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars An ingenious, practical, and understandable resource, February 1, 2006

Browning expresses her theories about human thought and behavior with a comfortable balance of research, application, and anecdotes. She masterfully answers the question, "Are we a product of genetics or of our environment?" The answer is yes, to both. She affirms her readers with encouragement that by recognizing and embracing their natural thought patterns and behavioral tendencies they are better able to make decisions that maximize their potential and personal enjoyment of life. She offers hope to those who wish to change themselves by offering a series of very practical exercises but is candid that change will require building new neural pathways that will not be easy. I felt, after taking and reflecting upon my own Emergentics profile, that it fit me better and was easier to understand and apply than the Meyers/Briggs approach.

The book will be helpful to employers who need to build teams with a full contingent of strengths. It will help employees who want to maximize their personal strengths in the context of what their jobs and bosses require or find a different job that better suits their own thought and behavioral preferences better. It will also help couples understand more about how their partner thinks and behaves. My advice is to first complete the simple online questionnaire at www.emergenetics.com, get your profile (well worth the cost) and then read the book. I STRONGLY recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Insight, January 17, 2006
This review is from: Emergenetics (R): Tap Into the New Science of Success (Paperback)
From the opening museum analogy to the useful toolbox, I found Emergenetics an informative and interesting read. Dr. Browning does a great job of detailing scientific findings with practical, real world applications. I particular enjoyed the numerous stories that help highlight and explain her research.

After reading this book, I understand my thinking AND behavioral preferences and the thinking/behavioral styles of those I encounter on a daily basis.

I have applied these principles to my work and my family, and it has already made a positive impact on my life!

Despite its clumsy name, Geil Browining's Emergenetics, offers practical and pragmatic advice on how to assess one's thinking and behavioral preferences on seven useful dimensions. Analytical, Structural, Conceptual and Social cover the thinking preferences and Expressiveness, Assertiveness and Flexibility cover the behavioral preferences. Emergenetics is the practice of developing thinking and behavior profiles on hundreds of thousands of individuals, analyzing these profiles for general understanding of individuals and groups and applying them to the improvement of personal and team effectiveness. Although the book doesn't discuss how profiles are generated, there is enough material to provide useful guidance to the reader in identifying and assessing these preferences in yourself and others.

This is a powerful resource for anyone in management, teaching, business, leadership or in any other field. I am familiar with Dr. Browning's work and am astounded at how well this text explains and expands the work. I particularly thought the examples were exceptional, interesting and very helpful. Read this book and you will have new understanding of how to value and work with others who have puzzled you in the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emergenetics - Tap into the new Science of Success, January 1, 2010

There are two things in life I regret - First, I did not pick up golf when I was younger, and second, Geil Browning's book came out so "late" and hence my exposure to all of this relevant research played little role in my development - I would have been a better person, and certainly more successful.

Anyway, I still find this work immensely useful, and the good thing, it can be proven - it is not just some scientific mumbo-jumbo that will be discredited in a few years. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Browning, and having met her, I know why this work was so complete, so to the point, and so practical.

My advice, start playing golf now, and for heavens sake read this book. You won't regret it.
