Book Description

October 1, 2010
Emerging Voices is a book of the poetry and artwork that I created in 2010 to describe the feelings of grief and loss I experienced after the death of my husband of 42 years. The bereavement community, friends and family encouraged me to share what I had written because my poems reached out and touched others in a profound way, regardless of the type of loss the reader had experienced.  Loss is most often associated with the death of a loved one; but feelings of loss also come from:
* divorce or a relationship breakup
* loss of a friendship
* loss of health or one's physicality
* loss of a cherished dream.
Sometimes it feels as if the pain and sorrow from loss will never let up.  These emotions are very raw and really hurt, but accepting them as part of the grieving process and allowing yourself to feel what you feel is necessary for healing. Grief and mourning is a poignant process - each one of us experiences that journey in our own way.
The healing process is just that, a process, and there is no magic "time" for an individual's grieving to end.  While leaving a permanent wound on your heart and soul, in time grief softens its hold.  This tender wound can be reopened without warning by an unexpected nuance or life event, and sorrow takes hold once again. The difference is that these unexpected moments don't last as long as they did in the beginning and healing continues.
* "Instead of a series of stages, we might think of the grieving process as a roller coaster, full of ups and downs, highs and lows. Like many roller coasters, the ride tends to be rougher in the beginning, the lows may be deeper and longer. The difficult periods should become less intense and shorter as time goes by, but it takes time to work through a loss. Even years after a loss, especially at special events such as a family wedding or the birth of a child, we may still experience a strong sense of grief." Source: Hospice Foundation of America

My book, Emerging Voices, is intended to be a heart-felt gift to the reader as he or she travels down the painful and winding road of loss.  There are blank journal pages within which provide a place for each individual to record his or her own thoughts and unique feelings. Writing helped me heal during that traumatic time and my wish is that my words within the book offer a place of solace for others. Whatever your grief experience, it is important to be patient with yourself and to allow the process to unfold naturally.
Like a puzzle, grief comes in all shapes and forms - as does the journey of getting to a place of peace and comfort within us.  Yes, my husband's death has forever altered my life, but I now know that I am grateful to have been given the gift of a renewed and transformed spirit. Today, when I meet someone who has experienced a loss, I do not say I'm sorry, I say from my knowing heart  "I understand."

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Just what is the Essence of Laurel and when did it manifest itself? How did I become an inspirational writer and artist at this time in my life?
I am a woman who experienced a life-changing event in 2009 - the death of my husband of 42 years - which transformed me into being the person that I am today. Through the process of loss and grieving, my creativity unfolded and my voice emerged. From my spiritual core comes Essence of Laurel's "Art from the Heart" - which includes my artwork, first book "Emerging Voices," writings and the newly created blog called  "Metamorphosis-Your Stories.
Art from the Heart is my playground; a place where I can tap into my innermost creativity as an inspirational writer and artist. The surprise is that it came at a time when I thought that the next chapters in my life would be lonely; without purpose or passion. Instead I have been given the gift of a renewed sense of life, its possibilities and most importantly, an appreciation for living in the present moment.
My first book, "Emerging Voices," was published in 2010 and revised in 2013.  This  journal is a compilation of my original artwork and inspirational poetry which speaks to the many faces of loss and/or life transitions. Death, an unexpected teacher, was my transformative metamorphosis that took me to my "essence".
  • Because I wanted others to "use" my words and artwork to help them while on their journey through any kind of loss, I intentionally included blank pages within my book to be written upon.
  • Our human experience, whether in a crisis or a life transition, continuously gives us the opportunity to learn and grow.  We can choose to stay in a place of sorrow and regret, or embrace these life-altering experiences from which we can discover a new perspective, sense of understanding and serenity.
Several of my articles and stories have been published by the Open to Hope Foundation, Author's Den, Baby Boomer Women and More.com.   My integrated digital artwork is shown at art shows here in Florida and can also be purchased on the Fine Art America site.
My hope is that my inspirational writing and artwork touches something within you and speaks to your heart.

More About the Author

About Laurel D. Rund - Essence of Laurel - http://essenceoflaurel.com

It began in 2009 when a life-changing event transformed me into the woman I am today. Never could I have imagined that the death of my husband of 42 years would take me on a journey through loss and grief to a redefined sense of self. Death, an unexpected teacher, was my transformative metamorphosis. The slow and painful healing process unfolded my creativity and, in what I can only describe as a "new normal," Essence of Laurel was born.

The surprise is that it came at a time when I thought that the next chapters in my life would be lonely; without purpose or passion. Instead I have been given the gift of a renewed sense of life, its possibilities and most importantly, an appreciation for living in the present moment.

My first book, "Emerging Voices" has a purpose ~ to serve as a journal and healing catalyst for anyone who has experienced a loss. The art and poetry within is a testimony as to what can happen when we acknowledge grief in all its forms. It allows for the discovery of a new perspective which will lead you on a journey of self-discovery and renewal.

Our human experience, whether in a crisis or a life transition, continuously gives us the opportunity to learn and grow. We can choose to stay in a place of sorrow and regret, or embrace these life-altering experiences from which we can discover a new way of being.
My hope is that my inspirational writing and 'Art from the Heart' touches something within you. Listen to your music ... Find your rhythm ... Celebrate this dance called Life

5.0 out of 5 stars Suprised Awakening! October 8, 2010
Format:Paperback
"Emerging Voices" is more than just a beautifully constructed piece of original artwork and poems...it's thought provoking, emotionally inspirational and the author's poetic expressions are totally relatable. It's one of those amazing gifts that keeps giving with the turn of each and every page. Just when you think you've found your favorite picture or poem, yet another tugs at your soul. What I truly love about this book is the author's foresight in providing lined pages for YOU to journal your OWN thoughts and feelings. Brilliant! I love, love, LOVE it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Emerging Voices" is a Journey to Your Heart November 18, 2010
Format:Paperback
Emerging Voices is a compilation of Laurel D. Rund's original artwork and inspirational poetry that speaks to the many faces of loss and/or life transitions. Written after the death of her husband, Laurel says the book's purpose is to encourage the reader to record her own thoughts and feelings. Which is why the book includes a unique feature: blank journal pages after each selection.

There are 14 poem-artwork pairings here, which deal with some of the hardest moments in our lives, the loss of a loved one, whether in death or some sort of challenging separation.

As you read the book, you will not wallow in your grief or be incapacitated by it. Instead, via the media of her words and art, she takes you on a journey that shows you how to grow through that grief and overcome the hurt with triumph.

Doubtless each of us experienced a major loss. We've been through a process of loss, as documented by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross. We know that we will pass through stages beginning with denial and anger, then passing on to bargaining, depression, acceptance. We will ask, "Why me?" and "Why now?" Then once we process our grief, we are able to learn to live again.

You can almost hear Laurel's voice helping you through the stages as you read the poems in this book - (which therefore, should be read in order, from front to back.)
But just to add a fourth dimension to this review, here is a link in which you CAN hear her read her poem, "This Puzzle Called Life," whose words are printed below:
This Puzzle Called Life

Pieced together throughout the years,
the outside border of this puzzle called "life"
presents itself as my human form.
Like a comfy pair of shoes, it is easy to wear
and visible for all to see.

5.0 out of 5 stars A visually beautiful and moving book October 19, 2010
Format:Paperback
Emerging Voices is a beautiful book where the author consolidates her lovely artwork and poetry. Through her moving words, which recreate her personal journey of loss and separation from her husband, we begin to see a newly evolved passion for life.
I would highly recommend Emerging Voices to anyone who has experienced a loss. Through the energy of this book (which includes blank pages for journaling) we are able to understand our own journey and release issues, feelings and limiting behaviors that no longer serve our highest good.

Laurel Rund has written a concise book for some of the hardest moments in our lives, the loss of a loved one, whether in death or some hard separation. Through this book, Rund allows us to grow through that grief and overcome the hurt with triumph.
Using her own sensitive poetry and her own gorgeous artwork, she takes us on a journey.
Each of us has gone through a process of loss. There is anger and dismay. Why did this happen and why to us?
Then we in time find what the process of that loss means to our own lives, we in turn learn to live again.
There are lined pages in addition to the artwork and poety, making this beautiful and useful book a journal for someone going through the same journey, to voice their feelings and thoughts. That will make this a great keepsake for people in need of solace.
That's what this book is: gentle solace, a hug when we need it, a hand we can hold in hard times.
Laurel Rund has beautifully placed the words we wish we could think when someone needs respite and to know there is life literally and figuratively after this one.
Very beautifully written work.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Can I go forward when my heart is here? December 2, 2010
Format:Paperback
Turn back, dull earth, and find thy centre out." Romeo & Juliet Act II Scene 1

First things first: The author of Emerging Voices, Laurel Rund, is my sister. I lived through the loss of my brother-in-law, really my brother when you get right down to it, of more than 40 years. I know how devastated I was by the loss that eventually gave birth to this book and can only imagine how devastated my sister was. So if you are looking for an objective, impartial review, you won't find it here. My thoughts are my own of course but they are hopelessly subjective so be guided accordingly.

I think that any time two individuals find themselves in a marriage or committed relationship there is an evolution in which two "I"s eventually merge into one "we". It is a natural and positive evolution I think but one that sometimes causes us to lose some sense of who we are. From the outside looking in it is reflected in how we describe the couple. For forty years I never said I was going to call Laurel or visit Laurel; it was always I'm going to see "Marty and Laurie". It was the same with all my siblings and long term friends and they with me. After a loss like this it seems the pain and grief is accentuated by the loss of that `we' and that feeling of who the heck am I now?

What Laurel has done in Emerging Voices is to show how she got her "I" back. For her it was exploring writing and the visual arts. She started jotting down her thoughts in a journal, writing notes, poetry and painting. Emerging Voices consists of a series of Laurel's comments and/or poems matched up with a piece of art Laurel has created. This is set out in the form of a journal with plenty of space in between each set for the reader to set out his/her notes or thoughts as they see fit.
