5.0 out of 5 stars Great for adults too!
While the book is designed to help "young" chefs, I recommend it for any novice cook. Concepts that some books assume you know are explained in detail. Saves me from having to call MY mom for help!

3.0 out of 5 stars Recipes are good, but....
My son brought this book home from the school library. He loves to cook and the recipes in this book work well for us to make together. They are definitely not easy enough for a 9-year-old to attempt on his own, but the point of this book is to make cooking an experience for the whole family. My biggest complaint is the cartoon drawings of all of the food. I'd rather...

5.0 out of 5 stars DELICIOUS FUN!, June 5, 2004
This review is from: Emeril's There's a Chef in My Family!: Recipes to Get Everybody Cooking (Hardcover)
It's a cookbook for the whole family, and who better than Chef Emeril Lagasse to put it together? Lagasse is approachable and expressive. Have you ever seen his toothpaste commercial? He looks like a guy who enjoys a good laugh. His cookbook is fun and imaginative. Illustrator Charles Yuen must be applauded for the colorful drawings combined with the pictures. They bring out the smiles, too.

His humor goes into the recipe titles as well: Waffable Waffles, Never-Enough Dinner Rolls, Talk About a Taco Salad, Totally Sloppy Joes, Blow-You-Away Bagel Chips, Rainy-Day BBQ Chicken, Best Baked Tomatoes, Just-Chillin' Chocolate Fridge Pie, My First Watermelon Granita.

This is one of the better cookbooks I've come across. Readers get a large book with kids' favorite recipes as well as recipes for grown-ups. All you have to do is give your breakfast, lunch or dinner menu a little "Emeril mix" and everyone leaves the table happy. Highly recommended.

They are definitely not easy enough for a 9-year-old to attempt on his own, but the point of this book is to make cooking an experience for the whole family. My biggest complaint is the cartoon drawings of all of the food. I'd rather have photos of what the food looks like than photographs of random people and drawings of the food. Very strange format, in my opinion. I wouldn't mind so much if there was a mix of photos and drawings, but there isn't one photo of food in the book. Who needs all of these strangers' faces? I wanna know what the finished product looks like!

I checked this cookbook out of the local library to see if there was anything my kids could cook and would like to eat. Wow! We've been cooking up a storm and loving it all. This book may be for kids, but it works wonders for any novice cook. You'll feel like a true chef after just one mouth watering recipe!

The recipes are tasty, pretty easy, and very well explained. My only complaint is that the graphics are cartoony -I'd much rather see real photos. That said, I'm ordering this cookbook myself because there are just too many good recipes to copy them down!

5.0 out of 5 stars Family Fun, March 22, 2006
This review is from: Emeril's There's a Chef in My Family!: Recipes to Get Everybody Cooking (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful collection of recipes. This has brought me, my mother and my daugther closer together. Every week we make new recipes from this book as well as the Emeril's There's a Chef in My Soup book. It is truly great for the entire family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!, February 8, 2006
This review is from: Emeril's There's a Chef in My Family!: Recipes to Get Everybody Cooking (Hardcover)
My 8-year-old son LOVES this book - he loves everything about it. He sits down with it weekly to plan what he would like to make next, and has willingly made and eaten things that he wouldn't go within ten feet of otherwise (artichoke, spinach dip, hummus...)

Obviously, this is a kid's cookbook, but I really like that it doesn't "speak down" to kids - it's challenging, but on their level. The font is easy to read (a plus for emerging readers), the pictures are colorful and inviting, and the recipes are not what you find in most kids' cookbooks - they are varied and interesting, but fit (flavor-wise) what kids are likely to find appealing. (i.e., they have interesting flavors, but aren't so complex or layered that kids won't like them.)

I really appreciate this book, and its companion, There's a Chef in My Soup. Both books have given my son a love for cooking that goes beyond PB & J and ants on a log...he makes dinner for his grandparents, snacks for the librarians, and chicken salad just because it's Tuesday...and feels a lot more confident both in his ability to cook and his willingness to try new things. I definitely recommend this book!

This review is from: Emeril's There's a Chef in My Family!: Recipes to Get Everybody Cooking (Hardcover)
This cook book is great for cooking with your kids and anyone else. Whether you are planning for a snack with your friends or just making food for a party or anything else. It has easy step by step directions, and it tells you what utensils are needed and if it safe for your child to do it all by themselves. I recommend this book for anyone who is interestede in cooking. It is great fun!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars an entertaining cookbook?, July 31, 2008
This review is from: Emeril's There's a Chef in My Family!: Recipes to Get Everybody Cooking (Hardcover)
I never thought a cookbook could be enjoyable. Simple recipes that taste great as we have all come to expect from Emeril. Some recipes are more geared to a younger reader - which is the point of the book, to teach younger people that being a chef in your kitchen is fun. My 11 year old has cooked some dishes from this book, and other recipes I have served at dinner parties. A good primer and introduction to cooking. It has a great section on "how to" subjects with illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Family Cookbook, January 5, 2007

This review is from: Emeril's There's a Chef in My Family!: Recipes to Get Everybody Cooking (Hardcover)
We had checked this one out of our local library and decided it would be cheaper to just buy the book rather than pay the late fees. While I'm no big fan of Emeril's show, I have to admit tht I just love most of his recipes. My 10 year old daughter loves the cookbook because it is a simple children's level cookbook with plenty of tasteful recipes
