PLEASE NOTE: the other reviewer bought a refurbished item. Please don't confuse his bad luck with a previously repaired item, for the quality that this vcr really has.

I have approx 3000 movies on vhs. I wanted something to guarantee watchability in the future, as things go digital. Makes no sense to re-purchase everything I have on vhs. If you are like me, you also purchased another phonograph and needles to ensure you can play your vinyl records too. That aside, you will not be disappointed with the quality (4 heads!) and the user friendly set up. No manual needed. Onscreeen display, and I cannot believe how light this unit is! Size is compact and fits everywhere I have put it so far.

Bottom line, go for it. There is no buyer remorse here.

I have regretted purchasing this VCR since it arrived a year ago.

I had to send the first 2 that I received back because they didn't work at all. Finally, third times the charm... I got one that worked! But its got problems... I watch a lot of prime time tv and 2 soaps and dvr is not available to me at this time... so when the video on my old VCR started to go out I had to get a new one. Unfortunately, the stores no longer carry just plain VCRs and I didn't have enough money at the time to pay for a DVD/VCR combo. So I found this one and ordered it. Now don't get me wrong... I use it alot, but I have to deal with its flaws.

First, if I record anything in SLP, it is not watchable! It skips and you can't understand a word that is being said plus a white line covers most of the screen. So SP it is and that means only 2 hours of recording time at max!

Secondly, I can not rewind tapes all the way to the beginning or the VCR rejects them and spits them out. This also cuts down on recording time and occasionally it cuts off before the end of my program!

These problems started within months of starting to use this product. With the cost of the VCR, cost of shipping, cost of sending it back (I paid for the first time but refused to pay for the second) and the wait to actually be able to use it... I would have been better off just forking over the extra money and buying the combo.

Oh forgot to mention... my first review of this product was shortly after receiving it, and I only stated that I had trouble getting one that worked to begin with. I received an email from the seller asking me to remove my negative comments, because it was their livelihood to have decent reviews... what about the customer? hmmmm

I received this for Christmas for my children to watch old VHS movies. It quit working today - less than 6 months old. Be prepared to replace it soon if you buy it. We didn't even use it that often. Merry Christmas! LOL

We got this for the kids to watch all their old movies that we had accumulated. We didn't need anything fancy and thought this would fit the bill. It quit rewinding after about 3 months and quit playing completely not long after. It is a worthless piece of JUNK!

You have been warned - Stay away or lose your money. This merchant grossly misrepresented this VCR as factory reconditioned, but it was not. The unit was unable to rewind properly (1st use). The unit also will not release my VCR tape (2nd use) so they owe me a new tape as well.

I find it hard to believe that I'm the only one who thinks that this whole "DVD" thing is a fad. I've never truly understood the benefits of a digital disc over a good old VHS tape.

For one, the spines on my VHS cases are much thicker, making it easier to find my copy of "Mannequin 2: On the Move" on the shelf. Second, it's so simple for me to fast forward through all of the FBI warnings. I've heard some DVDs actually make you sit through those warnings before getting to the main menu. I can't imagine.

Which brings up another point - who needs a menu?! All I have to do is put my VHS tape in the VCR and my movie is playing in a matter of seconds. No complicated screens to navigate my way through.

When my trusty Sanyo VCR finally met its devise, I turned to Amazon.com for my replacement needs.

The Emerson EWV404 had everything I needed, without all the bells and whistles of the unnecessary DVD/VCR combos. The four-head feature was a nice option, but honestly, my 19" Zenith television only showed a minimal improvement in picture quality over my old two-head VCR. Perhaps my favorite feature of the Emerson - and I don't know why someone didn't think of this sooner - is the set of audio/video input jacks located on the FRONT of the machine. Genius, and so convenient.

The on-screen programming display was a nice idea (in theory), but overall I felt it was a little too fancy for my needs.

So, you DVD snobs can keep your layer changes and Blu-Ray, my VCR will do just fine, thanks.

I bought this refurbished VCR from DiscountJungle in May, 2009. Despite some negative reviews I read about this VCR, I ordered it anyway. I received the VCR promptly, and was pleased with the customer service I received from DiscountJungle.

Initially it worked perfectly. Three months after receiving it, anything recorded on the unit is unwatchable on any of my VCRs. I wish I would have taken the negative reviews more seriously, as I have now wasted $32.88 ($18.95 plus $13.93 for shipping and handling). I threw it in the garbage today, as neither Amazon.com, nor DiscountJungle.com stand behind purchases beyond 30 days, especially if the item purchased is not "new".

I will never purchase another "refurbished" item again. I will also make sure there is some kind of warranty/guarantee for at least one year from the date of any purchase.

For those looking for a VCR of any kind these days.. good luck.
For those shopping at DiscountJungle.com ... read all of the fine print so that if you get something that craps out before a year has passed, you have recourse.
For those shopping at Amazon, com ... make sure that if you aren't happy with your purchase for up to one year, that you have some way of complaining/ making the seller correct the problem.
