Emerson’s Hot Wheels Turbo Talkers two-way radios are a must for any boy. These two-way radios are perfect for backyard camping, bike riding in the neighborhood with friends or for outside forts. The uses are as limited as a boy’s imagination. These exclusive two-way radios showcase Hot Wheels trademark racing flames. Radios have 14 different channels to choose from and can be used within a two-mile range. Each radio has a LCD channel display and a low battery alert. The two-way radios have automatic channel scan and squelch control to help reduce static to provide the best channel quality. Radios have keylock to eliminate accidental battery drain. Two-way radios operate on three AAA batteries, each model. (model # HW500)

Bought for my son's 5th bday. Decent sound, decent coverage -- a good bet for the price.
(1) You have to hold down a button to turn on, and off: that's handy so you can control when it's on to ensure battery doesn't run down unduly; (2) You need to take the time to slowly show your child that they press a button to talk, and THEN NEED TO RELEASE BUTTON to hear. This is actually good practice on turn-taking, and following a process. Recommended.

I bought some for an 8-year-old and he and his brother are having a blast with them. Caveat emptor: walkie-talkie channels are not private, so don't use these toys for serious communication except in an emergency. The little darlings accidentaly interrupted somebody else's conversation (at the top of their little lungs).

Just opened them for my two sons and one doesn't even turn on. :( Now I have two sad little boys.
