It comes off easy, meaning it's not glued or using any strong adhesive, but does often rip when you take it off when it encounters a hole or other cut-out piece.

The item was well packaged and everything in the picture was included. Note: There's no instructions in the picture, so don't plan on getting any. It was easy enough to assemble without instructions using the pictures. There were also extra nuts and bolts provided. I believe I had one extra long bolt, and a number of extra smaller ones, including extra nuts. Also, the clear plastic body piece and the encoder wheels are covered in a protective paper type material. In the picture you can tell they assembled the car and then took off the paper. That is why you'll see the brown paper under the items in the picture. It comes off easy, meaning it's not glued or using any strong adhesive, but does often rip when you take it off when it encounters a hole or other cut-out piece. So it takes a few minutes, and doesn't just come off in one pull. Once you do this to the encoder wheels, the wheels are entirely black, and just have notches or cut-outs to be used. I'm not exactly sure how these encoder wheels are designed to be used? Once assembled I wired it up with an Arduino and a H-Bridge Motor Driver (SN754410) and had it driving around with per-programmed instructions within the day. I don't think the 4 AA batteries could power the motors and the Arduino, but the batteries did provide plenty of power for both of the motors. Or not my Arduino Duemilanove anyways... which I believe needs more then 7V to keep it happy. Good enough for a quick little project \ learning experience. Would have given it 5 stars if the front caster wheel turned a little better and some of the tolerances with things were a little better. But overall it met my expectations and worked as intended.

I gave this 5 starts not because it is the best robot platform. It's not. It is cheap and very simple. It just two cheap motors and plastic wheels and a very cheap plastic "body". The encoders are a disk with 48 slots that mount to the wheel axel. So you get 48 counts per rev. BUT you need to buy the IR detecters. for detectors buy the "HY301-21" optical switch and connect it to the interrupt line on an Arduino and measure the microseconds between the slots on the disk.

Note this robot will NOT do anything at all except drive in a big turning arc and crash into wall. Not until you add a small computer to control it, some sensors the encoder detecters and write some software. This is just the basic platform with no "brain" no sensor and not even all the parts you need to make the wheel encoder.

For the price, this is one of the best kits that you can purchase for building a basic robot. I let me 8 year old daughter do most of the construction. We are adding an Arduino with the Motor Shield and a few sensors. Great school project. There are a lot of holes for mounting things. The one thing I would say, the holes don't line up for the Arduino, so I am making a custom mount that will line up with these holes.

This is a really inexpensive robot chassis, but as expected so are the materials. The cheap plastic battery case was broken when I got it and the plastic top is cracking around all the screws. I would recommend that you use lock-tight and not tighten the screws too much.

I used an Arduino with a motor shield and encoders to control the robot. The drive train has a large amount of hysteresis between starting and stopping. I found that I needed to pump the PWM way up to get the motors going then I could back them down to slow the robot. Unfortunately the PWM required to start, and the PWM where the drive stopped were not consistent and represented a large delta in PWM range and robot speed. Additionally the cheep gear box made the wheel speed vary with rotation, especially at low speeds. This made it very hard to create a control loop that would keep the robot going in a straight line and tended to stall one side out at the slow speeds I was trying to run at.

This car is way to fast for what I wanted to do with it. It has basically two speeds; fast and faster. Forget about using this for line tracking. You could probably use it to navigate a room with distance sensors, but that was not my goal. The robot is cheep but you get what you pay for. The poor quality of the drive makes controlling the robot more trouble than it is worth. I would not recommend this as a starting platform, especially if it is your first build.

It works great for small robots. I build an Arduino obstacle-avoiding robot with this chassis. The motors seem to draw a lot of current, which required an additional motor shield for the project, but otherwise it does the job well.

This robot kit works as it should and there is still a lot more it can be modified into. The parts are in acceptable quality, fully working and seem like they'll last for some time. Be more careful on the clear plex platform, it is easily scratched but that does not bother me. Overall, this is a nice product for hobbies and school projects.
