5.0 out of 5 stars Best Neo-Tango Disk of 2004
Tanghetto's "Emigrante (Electrotango)" is tango for the new millennium. This is Neo-Tango, and has been well received from Buenos Aires to Nijmegen to New York. This is the tango for the "under 30 crowd." It is not your father's tango. Some people do not even think it is tango. These are the purists who call it "tango loco." 3.0 out of 5 stars Would be much better without the silly sounding beats
I don't really understand the enthusiasm about this CD. The music could be great and danceable, but the beats are just embarrassing. It sounds like they come from a cheap casio keyboard for home use.
Unfortunately a couple of other Electrontango-Cds have this problem, too.
It seems that there are two kinds of Electrotango releases: some made by tango...

These are the purists who call it "tango loco." The music is a fusion of modern tango with techno and jazz to a traditional tango beat. "Traditional tango beat" may be misleading because most tango (other than candombe) does not use percussion instruments. It is an interesting sound. Did I mention that this disk was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2004? You will note that it may take a long time between the ordering of this disk and its delivery. It is well worth the wait.

So much for that. If you are an Argentine tango dancer, you should be now familiar with the Neo-Tango genre, and if you are not familiar with Neo-Tango, perhaps you should learn something. There are many milongas (Argentine social dances) where this music is played. You will also hear the music of Gotan Project, some of the Gotan Project remixes, as well as the Bajofondo Tango Club and music of Carlos Libedinsky. The point is that people dance to this music. When the music is played, get out on the floor and dance to it.

My favorite selections on the disk are "Inmigrante" and "Alexanderplatz Tango." You can feel the inspiration of Piazzola combined with the bandoneon and electronic keyboard. Although the above were my favorite pieces, I find the whole disk quite danceable. It has some possibilities for "cross over" into the mainstream from salon tango to club dancing, so this disk should be taken seriously. Yes, I could venture to say that if this disk was played at my local Veterans of Foreign Wars club, there would be people on the floor dancing to the music just from an appreciation of the music and the beat.

This is one of the best electronic tango CDs I've listened to. The distict melody, variation of use of instruments blend perfectly with the bold beat and rhythm, it's definitely something one can both dance to and lounge with.

I have listened to some other electrotango CDs, and a lot of them tend to be repetitive, background-ish, and boring. This one is definitely what electrotango music should be.

The other CD I really like is titled "La Revancha del Tango" by group called Gotan Project

5.0 out of 5 stars Electrotango is one of the top five records of the year, October 19, 2004
This review is from: Emigrante (Audio CD)
Last September I had the chance to visit Buenos Aires and found this new and refreshing sound that it is "electro-tango". I bought a few records: Gotan Project's, Tanghetto's, and Tango Crush's.I think that the one I like the most is Tanghetto's. The songs are special and they show the real new sound of Buenos Aires.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR NUEVO TANGO DANCERS, December 11, 2004
This review is from: Emigrante (Audio CD)
This Argentine Winter (Summer in USA) in BUENOS AIRES I attended the MUNDIAL DE TANGO, and was amazed by the way modern tango dancers are embracing this new electrotango sound. Tanghetto played there and people started dancing from the very first note..
There's a regular electronic tango set in LA VIRUTA and the dance floor gets packed when the electrotango set begins.
I highly recommend this cd , great for both tango dancers and music lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars The revolution of the Electrotango, July 12, 2004
This review is from: Emigrante (Audio CD)
Emigrante (electrotango) is a masterpiece that mixes the best elements of tango and electronic music. The influence of such artists like the best modern tango icon, Astor Piazzolla and great electronic bands like Saint Germain and Chemical Brothers has created a unique blend of music: the electrotango.
The production of the record is incredible, it is cool and refreshing.
From the first song, "Immigrant" until the last one one "Exile of the Soul", there is a special climate created by the bandoneon that conquers the soul of the ocasional listener.
The word of mouth helps great records to become popular, this is the case with Tanghetto's cd that became a smash instantly, because of the quality of its music. And that is the thing that every music lover is trying to find desperately.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST INSTRUMENTAL LATIN GRAMMY NOMINATION, October 28, 2004
This review is from: Emigrante (Audio CD)
I really like the record, Emigrante is an excellent album,I like the atmospheres and melodies,it's quite unique, It's true that the electronic loops are just the background to this great tango music, and that's what's inteded to be . This ain't no psycho rave album, this is MUSIC.
I recently read that this album was nominated for the latin grammys in the best instrumental category, as Bajo Fondo was nominated last year.Guess electrotango is here to stay!

5.0 out of 5 stars The neotango experience, July 13, 2004

I was surprised by the excitement of this neotango cd called "Emigrante". The concept of the cd is based on the suffering of the inmigrants and emigrants from all over the world, their ups and downs, and their struggle to survive. The music is amazing creating a new and special sound mixing elements of tango with ambient music. This cd and Gotan Project's are the best neotango cd's i ve heard so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best in electrotango, June 25, 2004
By
Martin Nelson (Jacksonville, FL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Emigrante (Audio CD)
Combining traditional tango's urban sensuality with today's aesthetic of electronica, Tanghetto, released their excellent debut album "Emigrante" in January 2004. With a hypnotic mood and captivating nostalgia this album is a must have for anyone interested in the new tango fusion that's becoming a new sensation in Argentina and Europe. It's an amazing instrumental album, with the bandoneon painting this modern sonic landscape that's great for both listeners and dancers.
Emigrante relates the story of today's Argentinean youths that were forced to flee out of their country in one of history's worst economic crises. It shows the different faces of history in a musical journey, how a land of immigrants became a land of emigrants and how those factors influenced their culture and music.
I became in love with his record almost instantly and I can assure you it's the best electrotango album out there.
