5.0 out of 5 stars Dishes for a red & white kitchen
Original Review Oct 28, 2002 - gave it 4 stars at the time

2.0 out of 5 stars If only they would arrive in one piece!
These are really nice - substantial weight, classic design, functional. The white is a slightly blue-ish white - not at all creamy (if you've been looking at a lot of white dishes you'll appreciate the distinction). The problem is that the manufacturer or distributor doesn't pack them with enough care. I ordered two sets to try them out before putting them on my...

Original Review Oct 28, 2002 - gave it 4 stars at the time
This set of dishes is very nice. My wife would like to have a red & white kitchen and finding truly red dishes is very difficult to do. We bought one set of these to make sure they were really red (not burgundy). We felt the price is a bit high on these dishes. However, we bought this set when they were including a set of bowls free which made the price seem more reasonable.

Unfortunately, the dishes came broken in dozens of pieces. So we had to send them back. The description makes these dishes sounds somewhat indestructible which is obviously not true. Then again we've all seen how some shipping companies handle products. Amazon.com handled the return very professionally. By the time we got the replacement set and had a chance to see them for a week to make sure it is what we wanted Amazon.com discontinued the free bowl sets.

If you don't mind spending $ for one set of dishes this set is very usable and looks great. The dishes were not as heavy as I expected them to be. They seemed to be very well made. My wife likes the lip on the dinner plate, it keeps juices from dripping off the side.

If the free bowl deal comes back we will be buying more of these.

Update to Review Dec. 30, 2002
The bowl deal never came back but one Friday afternoon Amazon dropped the price significantly on these sets. We purchased 7 more sets. The following Monday the price was back to list. When we received the new sets, two were broken. We were able to piece together one good set out of the two broken sets and returned just one broken set. We quickly received a replacement set.

We love these dishes and despite the poor packing between the dishes for shipping I've upgraded our rating to a 5. We've since bought other Emile Henry Red pieces. The dishes are very well made, are a nice large size and very attractive.

Now if I could just get back to finishing the kitchen my wife would be happy!

5.0 out of 5 stars The red is utterly gorgeous!, December 19, 2002
I own both Le Creuset and Emile Henry cookware and serving pieces and I have to admit when it comes to red colours Emile Henry wins hands down. This is the most beautiful and vivid a red and as sappy as it sounds, the colour literally makes me smile. His dishes are beautiful and so well made.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Dinnerware!, January 6, 2004
By A Customer
These dishes are wonderful - strong and attractive, with just the right weight. When I first picked up the dinner plate, I was surprised by how nice and heavy it felt - great quality. It's important to know that the pieces ARE NOT an opaque white color - when I ordered mine I was expecting these solid bright white pieces. Rather, they are more of a translucent bright white glaze - beautiful still, but not solid. Nonetheless, I am in love with the dinnerware and could never return any of the pieces!

5.0 out of 5 stars very nice, December 10, 2002

These pieces are very nice - classic and exotic at the same time. We chose red and are very happy - it is a true red. The proportions are right, the heft is hefty, the feel is right!

These are really nice - substantial weight, classic design, functional. The white is a slightly blue-ish white - not at all creamy (if you've been looking at a lot of white dishes you'll appreciate the distinction). The problem is that the manufacturer or distributor doesn't pack them with enough care. I ordered two sets to try them out before putting them on my wedding registry. Both arrived with broken bowls. Then I ordered replacements and one of those arrived broken. So, after calculating that I'd have to field up to 32 boxes to get 8 intact place settings, I gave up. Fortunately Amazon is very good about returns for broken merchandise...

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, timeless, top quality, March 29, 2005
Emile Henry products are fabulous. I love my dinnerware. I bought it after I purchased the salad set of large salad bowl plus small bowls. I had no idea at that time what I was getting. I opened the box, and I couldn't believe the heft and quality of these pieces. I have the red, which is gorgeous.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Dinnerware, January 31, 2007

We bought a set of these in dark blue and just love them! They are beautiful on the table and go right in the dishwasher after dinner. With so many things being made in China these days, it is refreshing to find a high-quality product like this that is made in France. My only complaint, and it is minor, is the paper labels are incredibly difficult to remove from the back of each plate. You need to allocate 1 to 1 1/2 hours to scrubbing with mineral spirits to do a whole set of dishes. Since these plates are so fabulous, I decided to award five stars despite the label issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aside from the price, I am SO IN LOVE with my dishes!!, April 5, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I almost feel nutty being giddy with excitement over my dishes. I have considered the Emile Henry line for some time based on what I heard about their bakeware. I honestly thought I'd be content with perhaps a pie dish, maybe some ramekins but when I saw the Cobalt dinnerware, I was like a madman, totally obsessed with having to have them.

Well, I received my sets and I couldn't be happier with them. The colors are absolutely vibrant and so rich in color, which I love. Like others, I was surprised by the heft and weight of them, they seem very sturdy. I love how they can be placed in the microwave, dishwasher, freezer and such. At first, I was very careful with them and handwashed each piece. I soon found out that I don't have to give them any special treatment, I've accidentally banged them together, one slipped out of my hands into the sink and there are no signs of damage whatsoever!

My only complaint with this set is the soup bowl. I guess someone could have a small serving of soup but I think it's better suited for salad, fruit or as a sidedish, or maybe even for a bowl of ice cream as it's not as deep as I would think a soup bowl would be, maybe it's industry standard, I don't know. I could see one easily spilling the soup if they were walking with the bowl to the table and if you didn't fill it all the way, you wouldn't have much soup. I'd recommend the pasta bowls or cereal bowls to use for soup instead. Maybe my portions are too large, but that's just my opinion of the bowl. Even with this sized bowl (the width is GREAT, it's just the depth), I am not hesitating to complete my set. I'm so, so grateful that they have restocked the Cobalt Blue!! I simply love this color.

As for the shipping, maybe I shouldn't jinx myself but so far, every single piece I have received has arrived intact, no chips, no damage whatsoever. I only wish Amazon would lower their price so I could add more pieces!!!

OK update: I just received additional sets to try to complete my service of 8 set...my first (new) box had a damaged plate in it. I opened my 2nd box this morning and I am missing a salad plate out of it. By combining one from the damaged dinner plate set, I have another complete set but I still had to request a replacement.

**I just got off the phone with Amazon and they were awesome. They immediately put in an order for a replacement.

Hopefully, future shipments will be in better condition. My first two shipments (pasta bowls and the 16 piece dinnerware set) were absolutely flawless and in perfect condition! Seriously, unless someone was packing the dark or totally oblivious, they could not have missed these scratches!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific country cook-ware, December 10, 2002
By
I bought this for a friend and when he held it in his hands, it was precious for him: the beauty, the quality. He was speachless.

I gave someone something important.

I, who do not cook, but, know a beautiful table, have given this to others, too, and they are thrilled. Thrilled!

For a lovely table, country French, this is special, indeed. You can't go wrong.
