I love Emile Henry and these little pie plates are great, they are just too cute. Oh - and kids love them... They really look great on the table, it is worth making individual servings. You can use it daily and it will always look like new, it is very durable. It is just a pleasure to have in the kitchen, I can not say anything bad about it. I give Emile Henry to both of my sons and they love it as well.

These pie dishes are perfect. I bought a total of eight, so everyone in my family could have their own individual pie. They are a bit big for that, and we often use one pie per two people. The dishes are heavy, brown the bottom crust evenly, and look beautiful.

Definitely the closest to my ideal mini baking dish,

I started out with the Impossible Dream: an individual sized baking dish that was not metal or silcone, not made in China, and could be used in the broiler. The last two requirements were the hardest to meet, because very few pieces of stoneware are broiler-safe and finding any kind of kitchenware that's not Chinese-made is like finding a needle in a haystack nowadays. Pretty much narrows it down to Staub, Le Creuset, and Emile Henry."Broiler safe" turned out to be the challenge for all three, not to mention shape of the baking dish. I didn't want/need something that looked like a mini dutch oven, and the oval au gratins were all either way too small (doll dishes, anyone? LOL) or too large for a one-person serving. The shape eliminated the Staubs and the sizes eliminated most of the Le Creusets. While Emile Henry does make a line of broiler-safe bakeware (their "Flame Top" line) it does not include individual size items. I ended up calling Emile Henry customer service to ask about the broiler use and a very helpful lady explained that yes these could be used for a very short period under a broiler (perhaps a minute or so, to brown the top of something) and at least 4" away from the element. That wasn't precisely what I had in mind but since it was obvious that there are no other choices that can take a longer broiler-time exposure, I went with these. I was happy to see that they come in white which goes with whatever tableware I might happen to use. Their pricepoint is the same as the individual Le Creuset pieces but the actual interior capacity of these is more useful (the LC oval au gratin measurements include the handles, which IMHO does not have anything to do with the ability of the dish to hold X amount of food!). So although I wish they were a bit less pricey (E.H. obviously does not permit any discounting of their products anywhere) I am happy with them because they come the closest to what I was trying to find and their customer service was helpful, informative, knowledgable and a pleasure to speak with. Taking everything into consideration I am giving these 5 stars even though it is not made for extended-time broiler use.

perfect pie-for-two size,

These pie plates are just like the full-size Emile Henry pie dishes only smaller -- the fluted edge is pretty without being precious, and the ceramic material helps the crust get nice and crispy.I find that a half-recipe for crust is just enough (I make a whole recipe and freeze the rest) and the remaining space holds exactly one basket of berries. it's the perfect summer dessert for two, and you get a better crust-to-filling ratio than a big pie.

I ordered these for my Mother for Mother's day thinking she could use one of them to make a small pie for her and my Dad because a whole pie is too much for the two of them. I was very disappointed in the product due to the fact they say they are 5" and there is nothing 5 inches about them. They are 4 1/2 and that is pushing it. I sent it back and was out a present for my Mom. |
