5.0 out of 5 stars Makes butter the perfect consistency for spreading
It is such a pleasure to enjoy the use of spreadable butter on a variety of foods again. The consistency of the butter in the Emile Henry Le Potier butter pot is always PERFECT! I expected it to be too soft, but it's not. Just leave the pot on the counter and refresh the water twice a week. It's simple!
The opening is a little smaller than I would like, but I have...

2.0 out of 5 stars Quality material, useless design
Had wanted a butter crock for years; fell in love with this one in cobalt blue. But when I tried to use it, discovered the design resulted in a difficult to use, unsanitary product. The insertion opening at the top flares out to a bottom. This means that unless you have a curved knife, it will be difficult to get all of the butter out. Worse yet, there is a small...

The opening is a little smaller than I would like, but I have no difficulty getting the butter out. I can get the majority of it out with a regular knife. When it is almost completely empty, I use a small spatula to get every last bit of the butter. I wash it in the dishwasher, but have also washed it by hand. It cleans easily if it is soaked in hot soapy water.
What a perfect gift this would be for all of my low carb diet friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars functional beauty, April 17, 2003

While I understand the previous reviewer's comment about the difficulty of getting the last of the butter from the crock, that is little to complain about in something that is both pretty and useful. Those of us who dislike trying to spread hard butter on a piece of toast will find this a great device. The butter stays fresh and soft and you can drive your guests crazy by asking them to guess what the dish is for.

The insertion opening at the top flares out to a bottom. This means that unless you have a curved knife, it will be difficult to get all of the butter out. Worse yet, there is a small groove around the inside bottom that is exceptionally hard to clean. Love Emile Henry, but this design is all wrong. Took the ones I bought back to the store and let them know why.
