Marcigny, a small town nestling between the hills of Southern Burgundy, has been home to Emile Henry for the past 150 years. Faithful to its origins, the entire production is carried out here. Thanks to its clay, rich in refractory properties, Burgundy has remained a fertile area for potters, passing on their savoir-faire from generation to generation. Clay, a natural and noble material, has been used since the mists of the time to cook or preserve food. While respecting the traditional techniques, Emile Henry has introduced technological improvements (Ceradon ®) so that the dishes are more resistant to mechanical and thermal shock. I've always wanted an Emile Henry soup tureen, so was pleased to find this one on Amazon at such a reasonable price. Upon unpacking the large, well-packed box, I was disappointed to find a very large dent on the side of the tureen's lid -- a dent the width of a thumb and markedly deep. Although the Amazon product summary doesn't suggest that the items are "seconds" -- with reduced pricing because they are flawed in some way, I am thinking this must be the case. I'm still trying to decide whether I should return the set and purchase one elsewhere (where I'm able to assess the aesthetic quality of the item before dropping a nice chunk of change...).

I received these as a wedding gift and love them! I know I'll be using them for years to come for entertaining! The little lion's head on each bowl adds a decorative detail that is unusual and fun! Bright colors make a splash at the table too!

This soup tureen and bowls are the greatest. I use them a lot, and just throw them in the dishwasher. Great value.
