Editorial Reviews

Review

I acquired this slender volume through interlibrary loan and what a gem it turned out to be! If you know nothing about Emily Carr, this book may serve as a wonderful introduction. Newland presents a brief overview of Carr's life and work and skilfully compliments full color reproductions of Carr's art with excerpts from her own writing. Indeed, Carr's paintings are well chosen and beautifully rendered -- far better quality than I expected in such a flimsy-looking book. Emily Carr as artist is outstanding, and her life is just as remarkable. The author describes her childhood in Victoria, British Columbia, and how she gradually found her artistic niche, primarily of nature and of the Native peoples of her area. Good choice of paintings to illustrate the author's analysis. Irma Jean Crouch, Saratoga, CA

A lovely book showing the paintings of this remarkable artist. Color is well done and pictures are very good, could be framed and the story of their production is most interesting.

This is the second book about Emily Carr that I have read. I also read her book, Klee Wyck. This book is a very good telling of her life and troubles. And it does it very directly. It is a short book but covers the subject well. There are many very good illustrations of her work included.
