A Classically Great Children's Book,
By Carl K (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Emily the Chickadee: Emily Waits For Her Family (Hardcover)
My nephew and I really enjoyed this book. The rhyming and pace of it reminded me a bit of Dr. Seuss. It is a sweet book without pretention or ulterior motive. Just a great kids book with no worries!
The illustrations were very cute and undoubtedly will appeal to the youngsters. The baby chickadees got a lot of hoots from my nephew! I was also impressed with the sturdy construction of the book, including a very firm cover and thick, tear-resitant pages. The book will last through several hand-me-downs! I appreciate the sentiment of observing and caring for animals without interfering with them. It's an important lesson for children, and one which is not always tought in school. Although the book does not lecture, it does show that a child can enjoy nature just through observation. A good lesson that is quietly embodied in a delightful story.

Emily Waits for Her Family (Emily the Chickadee)
My grandaughter loved the sweet story of Emily Waits for Her Family. She loved the colorful pictures and I think every little girl and boy will enjoy reading this adorable story. I think the fact that it is a true story makes it that much more special. Thank you and I hope for further story lines about Emily the Chickadee.

A WONDERFUL GEM HAS BEEN CREATED HERE.,
This review is from: Emily the Chickadee: Emily Waits For Her Family (Hardcover)
What an absolutely delightful and wondrous little book! Carol Zelaya, along with her illustrator Kristin Metcalf has created a true little gem with this one! Emily the Chickadee is the story of a little girl who strikes up a loving relationship with a small chickadee, which she names Emily, and eventually Emily's family. There is not one aspect of this work that is not charming.
The entire story is written in rhyme, and simple rhyme at that, which tells of a loving tale between the little girl and nature, specifically, a small Chickadee. You can sense the author's love for nature throughout her writing and her understanding in children. If you consider an author that can put their writing ability to good use, along with their love of nature and children, you have a pretty potent combination. The art work in this small book is a delight to the eye. The artist, Ms Metcalf has used smooth bright colors and has used these colors in a very effective way. No jumble of eye distracting detail is present. What you see is what you get. Her paintings of the birds and various flowers and other plant life are extremely appealing and anatomically correct in ever way. This lady apparently knows her subject! Now I have to admit that being an avid birder, flower gardener and amateur naturalist for over 60 years makes me quite susceptible to the subject matter here, but by any standards, this is a well crafted book. I did read this one to two of my young nephews and they did like it. This is a pretty good endorsement as these two young men are quite jaded in their respective five and six year old literature selections. I have to agree whole heartedly with another reviewer here in that I was delighted to note that the author approached the entire subject through observation, never once having the little girl interfering with nature's natural process. I like that as it is a good lesson for children (and some adults.) I also had to agree that the binding of the book and the entire construction was wonderful. This book will be able to hold up for quite a number of years. Everything about this work is a complete class act. This would make a perfect stocking stuffer for Christmas or just as a gift out of the blue to one of the wee ones. I highly recommend this one.

A charming read, and future classic,

Carol Zelaya tells a delightful story and Kristin Metcalf brings the words to life with her wonderful ullustrations. As someone who delights in watching the many chickadees that feed at my bird feeders I loved the story of the bird who sets up her nest in the window box outside the young girls bedroom window.
This is a book that would be perfect for someone to read to a young child, because the books is short enough to hold a childs attention, and the illustrations bring the book to life. I venture to say that this is the type of book a child will want read over and over at bedtime or nap time.

This is a lovely true story of a little girl's experience watching a chickdee build her nest in a nearby flower box!,
This review is from: Emily the Chickadee: Emily Waits For Her Family (Hardcover)
A little girl spotted a chickadee sitting on the branch of a nearby tree. She decided to call her Emily. The next morning she spotted her bringing little bits of leaves to start her nest. It was not in a tree, but in the flower box right outside the little girl's window. It would be a wonderful place to watch a bird family grow. She dreamily watched the nest until she saw three little eggs in it. Emily was keeping them warm and waiting patiently for her eggs to hatch. The little girl talked to Emily as she sat on the top of the fence and chirped at her. It wouldn't be long before the little ones arrived.
"Just twelve days later, what do I see? Another surprise waiting for me! In the nest with little Emily Are three baby birdies . . . One, two, three! She finally has her family, Yes, she's a mommy chickadee! This is a lovely true story of the author's experience with a chickadee who decided to build her nest where she could see and enjoy the life cycle of young birds. The magical look on the little girl's face when she is peering through her bedroom window brings out the magic that young children find when they discover the wonders of nature. The artwork is charming and meshes quite well with the tale. This book is one in a series of three. It would be a nice story to read and discuss during circle or story time in a homeschool or classroom setting. This book courtesy of the author in exchange for an honest review.

An awesome little book portraying the incredible relationship between a young girl and her chickadee friend that she names Emily. Written in rhyme , the story flows through the beautiful illustrations that are rich and lavish. The book challenges the readesr to go out into their own backyards and observe what is there. I loved the story because it is true and I love tender love stories between creatures and humans. You will be delighted with this book.

I read the first book in the series- Emily Waits For Her Family- and I thought it was adorable. It is a gentle story and the rhyming evokes a lovely peaceful feeling when you are reading it. The illustrations by Kristin Metcalf are bright and colourful. All three of my children enjoyed listening to me read Emily the Chickadee several times. The story itself is enjoyable and teaches at the same time. Zelaya even includes "My Chickadee Log" at the end of the book where your child can record their Chickadee sightings! Emily the Chickadee is a delightful book.

Chickadees are Fun,

The Emily the Chickadee series is based on a true experience of author Carol Zelaya. She became fascinated by a chickadee in her backyard who built nests in the most interesting places. I related to this story because my youngest daughter and I had similar experiences with a little wren in our yard.
In Emily Waits for Her Family, a little girls meets a little chickadee in her backyard and names her Emily. Emily is not only a chickadee, she is a mommy-to-be. The story follows Emily through building a nest, laying eggs, and babies learning to fly. This easy to read book is written in rhyme and illustrates how birds make nests, how eggs are hatched and how mommy birds care for their young. Children will read this story over and over again. There is even a chickadee log record in the back of the book for children to describe chickadees who visit them. Other Emily the Chickadee books include: Caring for Emily's Family and Emily's New Home.

Appreciating Mother Nature,

Based on a true story, this cute little book is about a special relationship between a young girl and a tiny bird.
This is the tale of Emily A cheerful little chickadee Who filled a young girl's world with glee By raising a small family The book introduces one of the wonders of nature in simple language and imagery that any child will appreciate and enjoy. A flower box so handily Does duty as a nursery For chickadees like Emily To safely raise their progeny Told in rhyme and beautifully illustrated, I'd recommend this one for children from about the ages of three or four, especially those with an interest in nature and cute little birdies. I'd never had the urge to see A poem `bout a chickadee But now that I've met Emily I've changed that viewpoint happily Amanda Richards, November 11, 2008 |
