Emily Dickinson & the Demon Lover
By Marion Woodman

Emily Dickinson’s poetry reveals the transformation of the "demon" (a compulsive, life-destroying attraction to the forbidden) into the "daemon" (a spiritual, creative guide to a new life). Woodman’s powerful reading and insightful commentary take us into the heart of the transformative process.
Topics include the Father Complex; compulsive relationships; much more.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Author and Jungian analyst Woodman explores archetypal images in the life and love poetry of Emily Dickinson in an original and timely study of feminine psychology, sexuality, creativity, and spirituality. In a jargon-free presentation of complex issues and concepts, Woodman analyzes how women like Dickinson can fall prey to the demon lover, also called the compulsive or codependent relationship. Dickinson was intense in her passion, love, and yearning for spiritual connection but was confined by a father complex, God projections, and the lack of feminine principle. She suffered grief and rage at the hands of unrequited love. Only when she came to understand the roots of the demon lover complex was she able to transform destructive energy into creative genius and discover her beloved. Dickinson probably would have appreciated Woodman's riveting reading of her poems. For upper undergraduate and graduate level collections.
