5.0 out of 5 stars Fun show to watch with your daughter!
My daughter loved Anne of Green Gables so we gave this show a try. I really enjoyed watching each show with her. The only downside to this would be the mystical aspect. Emily has visions of the dead and can communicate with them. It is rather strange and sometimes eerie. Other than that, she has a lot of spunk like Anne did, but she is definitely not a people...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first season
The first season was passable, though straying from the book's story often. The second season is very scary and not suitable for some children at all - or adults! My daughter loved Anne of Green Gables so we gave this show a try. I really enjoyed watching each show with her. The only downside to this would be the mystical aspect. Emily has visions of the dead and can communicate with them. It is rather strange and sometimes eerie. Other than that, she has a lot of spunk like Anne did, but she is definitely not a people pleaser. I did have my husband and son watch for one show and they didn't seem to enjoy it. This is definitely not a timeless masterpiece like Anne of Green Gables is; however it is highly enjoyable. We are looking forward to the release of Season 2.

Some of the characters such as the gypsy, Uncle Thom, Mrs. Kent and others are very scary. The story line strays so far from the actually books it is astounding. Though there are a few episodes which are not this bad, some are absurd such as the final episode with the all the varying ways Aunt Laura's wedding might turn out but we don't know which it is. I guess this is to get people to "cliffhang" until the 3rd season. It's really a shame because the books themselves are so classy.

5.0 out of 5 stars I CAN'T WAIT FOR SEASON THREE!!!, February 14, 2010

This review is from: Emily of New Moon: The Complete Second Season (DVD)
I loved Anne of Green Gables, which I've watched many times, and fell in love with PEI when I visited for the first time in August 2007 (a highlight was our visit to the house on the north central coast (no tour buses here!) where Lucy Maude Montgomery lived and where we met one of her descendents). So when I saw this new series by LMM, priced relatively inexpensively, I decided to purchase season one. I loved it enough to purchase season two, which I just finished watching. I didn't want it to end! Although I was getting impatient with Laura's decompensation after the death of Elizabeth for the first two or three episodes of season two, I also realized that such a reaction was understandable and realistic, given her character. Nevertheless, I was relieved when she rebounded and, although I disliked Isabel ("Lucifer") at first, as the ice in her melted I grew to appreciate her just as I grew to appreciate Elizabeth as she warmed up to Emily. Each episode was different and kept my interest. Just as Anne of Green Gables (the Megan Follows, Colleen Dewhurst version) had a strong ensemble cast, so does this new series. I'm eager for season three (when will it arive?) so I can find out whether Laura marries Ian Bowles or Ilsa's dad, whether Jimmy ends up with Eve, whether Isabel ends up with the teacher, and if Malcolm marries "Jezebel." Oh, yes, and I want to see how Ilsa and Emily mature from girls into adolescents and young adults (I assume Emily does become a writer but does Emily end up remaining single or marrying her cousin, Perry, or Teddy? Does Ilsa marry Perry who she's always fighting with?). So, if any producers are reading these reviews, please...don't end with season three!! I look forward to many more seasons of this wonderful Emilia of Nuova Luna!

3.0 out of 5 stars EXTREME EMILY!!! HOOOOO-AHH!!!, June 21, 2010

We watched how Anne3=Anne In An Alternate Universe, be prepared now for Emily In An Alternate Universe. I LOVE John Neville, of course, so it's fun to see him playing a Scotsman. Usually when I reach for L.M. Montgomery I'm looking for a little peace, quiet and wit. This is a bit more like a gothic romance of sinister proportions. Basic daily life doesn't quite occur. There are nightmarish elements and intense drama. Villains of pure evil seem to live in the town of Blair Water that are driven by motives so chaotic one might not come to the conclusion that Prince Edward Island is exactly a restful holiday retreat. The first season veered from the path of the books. This second season seems to take a far detour through the depths of Tartarus. There are fairly frequent scenes of violence, mostly young girls punching the daylights out of each other. Our protagonists are pulled through some of the most cringe-worthy, humiliating displays before townsfolk who are so miserable it's a wonder one could type it to a screenplay. It is astounding when an author already wrote so much lovely dialogue and stories, let's make a series and... not really use them. Hmm... Well, country, Victorian fashion, lots of serial drama? Might be what you like.

This is a story of how an orphan is raised not only by softening the hearts and improving the circumstances around her but by her lively imagination and relationship with the spirit world...delightful drama.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good show, but not like the books, April 19, 2010

This review is from: Emily of New Moon: The Complete Second Season (DVD)
I purchased season one and two and watched all the episodes. Then I read the books. Other then the names of the characters, the books are not followed as they were with Anne of Green Gables. I believe Miss Montgomery would have been proud of Anne but disapointed with Emily. Only because the books aren't followed. The actors who play the characters are fabulous. Stephen McHattie is a joy to watch. The girls who play Emily and Ilsa are wonderful actresses and a joy to see on screen. The mystical parts, talking to the dead etc, are silly and really aren't necessary, but we are stuck with them. The dvds are poorly made with missing episodes, poor quality, etc. I have quit purchasing the dvds and now watch Emily of New Moon on [...] for free. All of the episodes are available. Unfortunaley, the show ends after season 4 and there is no closing to the plots and we don't know what happens to the characters. I read the books, so I know. Aunt Elizabeth doesn't die, nor does Laura marry. Mr Bowles, his mother or his girlfriend aren't real either. Nor is Jack the farm hand. Jimmy doesnt' get cluncked on the head and become normal. Eve doesnt' exist, nor does Ilsa's new stepmother. I am enjoying the tv show even though it is so different from the books. I only wish they would shoot a new tv movie or short mini-series closing out the show. Eventually Ilsa falls in love with Perry and Emily with Teddy Kent, when they are adults and through with college. For the price, it is a good investment. I will probably break down and purchase seasons 3 and 4 so I will have them all.

Emily of New Moon has been a delightful show to watch as a family. We looked forward to each episode and couldn't wait to find out what happened next! We didn't care for the mystical parts either, but overall extremely good.

Emily of New Moon is one of our favorite movies to watch when I tend my grandchildren. They love each episode and ask to watch it frequently. I am an Anne of Green Gables fan, and find this series greatly resembles the "Anne" movies. I know others have mentioned the fact that this series can be scary for small children because Emily often sees spirits, but my grandchildren have been fine with it. I would recommend this movie to everyone.
