5.0 out of 5 stars To kid or not to kid
My daughter (Emily) is a healthy 7-year-old. I bought her this book, and had a look at it before I gave it to her. I thought it was a little dark, a little bit left of centre, but ultimately harmless. Maybe if you're Ned Flanders from the Simpsons, you would have a moral issue or two. Otherwise, this is fine. 2.0 out of 5 stars An OK read..
It's an OK little book.. that is, if you haven't been spoiled by the work of say, Jhonen Vasquez and Gorey himself. This series of books (I own this book and Book of the Strange) is pretty disappointing to me.

Emily loves this book - it appealed to her sense of identity in general - she felt special because of it, that it wasn't something that could be taken on by just anyone unless they too were called Emily. And she hasn't harmed any boy, dog, parent or herself since first reading it a year ago. She remains an upbeat, unique, and happy 7-year-old with a wonderfully skewed take on the world, much like the eponymous Emily the Strange.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emily: The Strange is The Best!, August 27, 2001
By
Hillary "jezebelxiii" (abington, ma United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Emily The Strange (Hardcover)
Emily: The Strange is a great little book! I randomly picked it up because I thought the cover art was catchy looking, and I was not disappointed at ALL! Emily: The Strange is about an atypical little girl who sees and hears things that other people only have nightmares about - however, instead of being frightened or wary of these things, she enjoys them. She's a little creepy (Addam's Family style) but very very funny and interesting overall. I believe that both kids and adults will have a hoot over Emily's bizarre (and a tad bit macabre) outlook on things. In my opinion, this little charm is creatively written and beautiful to look at . . . Cosmic Debris does some very interesting artwork and the use of the 3 colors red white and black is really neat. There are many fun things hidden within each picture, too, which encourages the reader to really examine each page to find something spooky or comical. I hope to see more things by this outfit in the future, because Emily: The Strange was too much fun! Happy Reading!

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully demented little coffee table book, August 9, 2002
By
This review is from: Emily The Strange (Hardcover)
As an Emily (obviously) who has had multiple black cats in my lifetime, I was immediately drawn to this darkly funny little book. I think Emily's individualism and uniqueness stand out above her vaguely sinister actions; she is simply a girl refuses to live her life as expected. It's a wonderful gift book for any teenage or adult Emilys - or anyone with the spirit of Emily the Strange.

2.0 out of 5 stars An OK read.., April 6, 2004
This review is from: Emily The Strange (Hardcover)
It's an OK little book.. that is, if you haven't been spoiled by the work of say, Jhonen Vasquez and Gorey himself. This series of books (I own this book and Book of the Strange) is pretty disappointing to me.

I usually don't resort to this as a reason, but I really think that this book is a little too immature. It must appeal mostly to 12 and 13 year old teenybopper girls who've "gone GOTH" or something.

So, if that's your demographic, go for it. But I got these books when I was 16, and I am VERY much into comics and 'dark' humor, but Emily doesn't cut it.

Emily isn't "strange". She's mostly your stereotypical "whoah I am sooooo unique" little girl. The book isn't funny and isn't creative. As much as I love red, black, and white, the art is completely lacking in detail and is not moving at all. It's not even creepy.

So in summary, I really don't like Emily. It's trying to fit into a genre while still appealing to young girls, and in my opinion it's failing.

I gave it one star because it looks pretty cute, as a book, and it had maybe 2 illustrations with a little 'hidden' picture that was kind of neat. I still will probably end up selling my copies though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Words to live by..., January 19, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Emily The Strange (Hardcover)
I think this book is great - It's short and to the point. One of those books I pick up and read in 5 minutes (literally - I think there's a total of 40 words in the whole book) when I'm having a bad day. Makes me smile, and that's what's most important. I bought myself a copy and bought a copy for each of my friends! By the way, it is NOT a novel. And it does read like a children's book, but that is why it's so darn cute.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Bookfor, April 23, 2003
This review is from: Emily The Strange (Hardcover)
I'm 15, ny name, ironically enough, is Emily. This book is hilarious, more so because I noticed several similarities between Emily and myself.

It's not for kids? That depends on your definition of "kids".
Many teens and pre-teens (myself included) feel kind of warm and fuzzy to realize that there is someone as strange as they are, strange enough to write a book about it even.

I would not say that this book is for "Goths", or at least not exclusively, it's just for people who are strange.

If you liked this book, try Emily's Book of the Strange, which is even better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Creepy, June 16, 2003
This review is from: Emily The Strange (Hardcover)
Emily the Strange is a brief and funny biography of Emily, a rather....odd little girl who doesn't just break rules; she breaks hearts. The illustrations went perfectly with the dark mood of the book. However, the story did not have much plot; it was basically a summary of Emily's life. I believe that to know more about Emily, one has to read the other books in the series. Despite the fact that this picture book is more for adults than for children, it has a quirky, goth-y charm that will definitely be appreciated.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing, April 7, 2003

Literarycritic (Orlando, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Emily The Strange (Hardcover)
This book was not at all what I expected. I went to the book store to find it because of all the high reviews it got. But I found it rather boring and very uncreative. One review said it read like a children's book, but it wasn't even that good. There was no story. It took just a minute to read and it read like a poorly thought out short poem. If you are looking for something with a interesting story, you will not find it in this book. I still have one question. Why do so many people like this book? That in itself is strange.

5.0 out of 5 stars The images change but Emily's always strange, February 8, 2004
By
Like most calendars not every month is a picture you actually enjoy looking at several weeks in a row but I really love the creative artwork shown here. I think they're all great but my favorite is probably February with Emily looking into a large oval shaped mirror with gothic candles adorning red wallpaper and four of her cats - two on each side of their master - staring at her many reflections with the words 'who's the strangest of us all?' written at the bottom of the page. She can also be seen floating through darkened space, having tea with her posse, teaching at ghoul school as a vampire bat with wings, standing before a creepy house that appears to be haunted, sailing down a white sky with her feline companions hanging from umbrellas, and those are only some of the illustrations featured here so if your an Emily fan than get your hands on this 2004 calendar before it's 2005!

And no, this isn't for kids.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Creepy Must-Have For Your Coffee-Table, April 10, 2003

This review is from: Emily The Strange (Hardcover)
"Emily The Strange" is a must have for those wierd peoples out there. The cover and the pages are great, and the story is darkly comedic. It's really great. I don't think you want to give this to your young children as a present, but it's not totaly horrible. It just has gothic like stuff in it, and it sends out not so positive outlooks, sutch as "Emily Dosn't Aim High, She Aim's Low." And "Emily Holds The Future In Her Own Hands: No Future." It's a great book besides this.
