Amazon Exclusive: Questions for Emily the Strange

How does it feel to have amnesia? I can imagine there are some situations in life where amnesia would be pretty useful, right?

Well, when you have it and don’t know what’s going on, it’s pretty grabbling frustrating. Once you know why you have it, and IF you are lucky enough to have given it to yourself, and IF you have a failproof way to get your memory back, it’s pretty exciting. Still frustrating, but good to know that it’s all for a reason. Did I mention you feel pretty stupid, too? I mean--you don’t even know who you are!

I bet golems are pretty handy, too--can you tell us how you made yours?

Hmmm. Let’s see. I won’t give you the full recipe, but I can tell you that my latest golem, Raven, was made from several parts bird (the Chihuahuan Raven species, to be exact--for its booming voice, navigational abilities, and superior lingual skills), circuitry from a discarded cash register (for simple math skills), extra-strength parabolic synth tubes (for muscle mass), super-long lasting chewing gum (we don’t want her getting tendonitis, do we?), various devices I “borrowed” from my mom (her garage door opener, curling iron, and blender), and finally a thermo-reducer distilling apparatus that cools volatile material (this golem needs to keep her cool in heated situations!). All that got blended with some real bad luck--and a golem is born! (Again!)

You’re known for your skills with a slingshot. Can you give us any slingshot-maintenance tips?

  1. Replace the elastic regularly (or better yet, use surgical tubing). This will keep proper torque and prevent backfire, misfire, or breakdown when you need it the most.
  2. Depending on the size of your rig, adding a tasteful bicycle grip to the shaft can improve handling, and thus your aim (and confidence).
  3. I find that a few basic modifications (time-reverse, teleport, x-ray vision) can really add value to a simple slingshot.
  4. Keep your gear out of the sun. It dries out the elastic, makes the wood brittle, and shrivels your soul.

If Nee-Chee, Mystery, Sabbath, and Miles wrote a book about your Lost Days, what would they say?

  1. NEECHEE: You’ve gone through a lot of trouble just to make more trouble for yourself.
  2. MYSTERY: Blackrock is such a magical essence, any effort to protect it would be worthy.
  3. MILES: It was a nice return to the alley. Been a while since I camped out there.
  4. SABBATH: Dude, Cabbage was close…but no cigar.

From Booklist

Reger’s gothy cult heroine, who began life as a sticker for skaters and other underground types before moving into comics, now makes the leap into full-fledged YA noveldom. But not to worry: this is anything but a sellout. The book (structured as the girl’s diary) opens with Emily coming to with a fresh case of plot-device-grade amnesia. As she tries to figure out who she is, where she is, and just about everything else (aside from remembering an affinity for cats and the number 13), Emily gets involved in a power struggle among a cast of shady characters in the town of Blackrock. Although the lurching plot perambulations are increasingly difficult to follow, there’s no doubting the lighthearted but darkly hued creativity on display, nearly always sacrificing sense for strangeness. A bevy of lists (all 13 items long) and black-and-red drawings work to break up the narrative. The central mystery of who Emily is eventually gets (sort of) resolved; any number of other unexplained peculiarities will have to wait for further installments. Pure black gold for the right readers. Grades 7-10. --Ian Chipman

3.0 out of 5 stars Odd in a good way..., July 9, 2009
By
This review is from: Emily the Strange: The Lost Days (Hardcover)
Emily has a case of Amnesia. She doesn't know who she is and why she is in the strange town of Blackrock. She renames herself Earwig and keeps on getting tickets for odd things. She finds four homeless and wandering cats, that start following her. Emily starts under covering secret after secret about herself and Blackrock. She finds a mission that she must do and why she really has amnesia. This book was really different and odd. I really liked the artwork in the book and Emily's snarky and funny attitude. The plot was mysterious. I don't know much about Emily the Strange. So, I didn't understand a lot of her quirks. Overall, it was a fun and quick book to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thirteen memorable things about Emily the Strange, March 2, 2010
1. Emily arrives in an incredibly boring town with amnesia, not knowing her name is Emily and going by the name "Earwig".

2. There is clearly a mystery.

3. Emily is too cool for the rest of humanity, and smarter than most.

4. The town's founder looks a lot like her.

5. Her look alike is definately not an act alike.

6. The travelling shows in town don't travel enough.

7. The town's economy is based on a junk mail factory and police corruption.

8. There are people there who are supposed to help her, but they're not very consistent.

9. Her notebook and her slingshot are probably more important than they seem (and they seem pretty important), and the cats are excellent.

10. Writing a list like this without spoilers is a bugger.

11. The coolest building in town is in cognito.

12. The El Dungeon cafe is near the center of the mystery.

13. She really likes lists of thirteen things.

Any thirteen year old girl who solders is pretty cool, and her adventures more so. Great, eccentric fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wicked Good, June 10, 2009
This review is from: Emily the Strange: The Lost Days (Hardcover)
Emily wakes up with "a wicked case of amnesia." She does not know her name, where she is, and why she is there. Through diary entries she follows the clues to her identity and her secret mission.

The Lost Days is quite imaginative, filled with daring feats and odd characters. The story is a spy adventure with element of fantasy. Emily is self-confident in her own identity, even when she does not know who she is. She uses math, science, and deductive reasoning to solve her mystery and succeed at her mission. Written in short chapters (diary entries) with black-and-red artwork, this book can be enjoyed by even the most reluctant reader.
