Cheerful illustrations set the upbeat (and updated) tone for this introduction to manners. A succinct running text introduces young Emily and her neighbor Ethan and comments on how and why they use manners as well as how etiquette can differ according to the time and place. More interesting to children, no doubt, are the comments made by the two children as they model sentiments, behavior, and polite speech in a variety of situations that children might encounter, from "Thanks for inviting me!" to "You are most welcome, Mr. President." A final page offers sound advice for concerned parents, with this basic message: "Always behave the way you want your children to behave." While children's books on manners are plentiful and the approach here is a bit scattershot, the playful look of Bjorkman's ink-and-watercolor illustrations makes this one of the more approachable etiquette books available for young children. Peggy Post, Emily Post's great-granddaughter-in-law, is a director of The Emily Post Institute and the author of more than a dozen etiquette books. Peggy is co-author of the new 18th edition of Emily Post's Etiquette, published in October 2011. Her other books include the 16th and 17th editions of Emily Post's Etiquette; Emily Post's Wedding Etiquette; Emily Post's Wedding Planner; Excuse Me, But I Was Next... How to Handle the Top 100 Manners Dilemmas. She is co-author of: The Etiquette Advantage in Business; The Gift of Good Manners - A Parent's Guide to Raising Respectful, Kind, Considerate Children; and Emily Post's Table Manners for Kids. I bought this book for our daughter when she was not quite 2. My spouse and I are a little obsessive about "please" and "thank you" and at 2 and a half, our daughter was already clear that at the end of dinner, she needed to say two things: "Thanks for a wonderful meal" and "May I please be excused?" Hearing such things, my Mom (who channeled Emily Post throughout my childhood) would say "you are so hard on her...she's still so young, let her be." (Grandmother's amnesia, because she did not recall putting us through our paces about table manners.)

Our daughter now talks about Emily and Ethan like they are friends of the family. She extrapolates what she has learned in the book by asking "What Emily and Ethan would do" in a given situation. Her favorite parts of the book are the magic words, Ethan waiting in line at school (we trace the line together) and the part about being quiet in church (which is a work in progress for her....). It was wonderful to see a connection between manners and "being kind" and "being respectful" in the book, because we have what are known as "The Be Rules" in our house: "Be Honest, Be Kind, Be Respectful, Work Hard, Help Others, Have Faith, and Have Fun!" (We also have the corresponding "No Rules" like "No biting, no hitting, no kicking, etc....) She has been able to rattle off some version of those rules since she was very young, and to see them in print, connected with the pleases and the thank yous was really quite good for her. It gave her another level of understanding of why manners matter.

She is a great little girl and we frequently get compliments on how polite she is (which is good, because the non-stop motion can be a challenge). So, thanks to Ethan and Emily for helping.

This is a very good etiquette book although I feel it is unsuitable for my three year old daughter. It has little points (although excellent) written all over the pages, which is too confusing for a young child.

This book would certainly be excellent for an older child who could read it for themselves and peruse all the little etiquette treasures it contains.
