Reading and Math are Fundamental!,
By George Buttner "Agent0042" (Dayton, Ohio United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Emily's First 100 Days of School...and More Great School Time Stories (Scholastic Video Collection) (DVD)
"Emily's First 100 Days of School ...and more great school time stories" features three film adaptations of some great storybooks -- "Emily's First One Hundred Days of School," "Reading to Your Bunny" and "If You Made a Million."
"Emily's First 100 Days of School" is based on a book by Rosemary Wells. It's a very faithful and fun adaptation of the story. It actually counts upwards from 1 to 100 and manages to keep it interesting and not boring. The numbers scroll across at the bottom of the screen, though are occasionally replaced by cute pictures. The entire thing is tied together as being a "Bunny News Network Special Report." "Reading to Your Bunny" is less faithful to the book by Rosemary Wells, but just as fun. In this story, Freddy Bunny has trouble learning at school because he watches TV and plays his Game Bunny all the time, but doesn't ever read. His teacher sends a fairy to his parents, who lays down the line for them. Freddy Bunny really needs to start reading. The fairy happily gives thoughtful responses to their excuses that they don't have time for reading (only twenty minutes a day are needed) and that books are too expensive (books are free at the library.) Freddy's parents give it a good try, but when their efforts don't work out at first, they don't give up. They take Freddy to the library, and soon, Freddy is a star reader! This story features an original song performed by Mary Chapin Carpenter. Also included is "If You Made a Million." This story features a magician who helps kids learn about all different kinds of money. This DVD also includes a couple of great bonus features. It has an interview with Rosemary Wells in which she discusses the creation of the book "Emily's First 100 Days of School" and also describes her writing process in general. Very insightful and great for fans of her works. Also included is a music video version of the song "Read to My Bunny." There's also a "Read Along" function, although it's probably not what you think. It's just what this DVD calls its subtitle option. Another winning release from Scholastic! This video will teach kids about counting, reading, mathematics and more. The overall presentation is strong and the stories are a lot of fun.

Great for 5 year olds!,
This review is from: Emily's First 100 Days of School...and More Great School Time Stories (Scholastic Video Collection) (DVD)
I got this to go along with the book for my little sister. She loves to sit in front of the tv with her book, while watching the movie, so she can read along with it.

Good intro to school terminology and activities for little tykes about to embark on nursery school or pre-school adventures, incorporating learning numbers to 100 and some fairly sophisticated words.
