Book Description

8 and up3 and upBlue Banner Biographies
Like many hip-hop stars, Marshall Mathers III rapped about surviving prejudice and poverty in the inner city. Except Marshall was white. Growing up in a rough section of Detroit, Michigan, he often experienced prejudice because of his skin color. When he took to the stage as Eminem, he endured the same bigotry.

As a kid everyone from his teachers to his favorite uncle told him to give up his hip-hop dreams. He couldn't. It was the only thing he was good at. Before he became successful, he spent years working minimum wage jobs and hoping for his big break. Marshall's big break arrived with a character he created named Slim Shady who gained Marshall millions of fans but also gained him critics enraged by his lyrics.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8--Disorganized information about this superstar is dispensed in five chapters but there is too little explanation for readers who do not know much about the hip-hop scene. The author addresses the young man's difficulties, including dropping out of school after flunking freshman year three times. Bankston also shows some of the things that advanced Marshall's career but points out that negative things continued to happen in his life. The closing chapter provides information on Vanilla Ice, the only other white rapper of note, and his negative legacy, which Eminem had to overcome. Too much is left unexplained in this book (and the vice president's wife's name is incorrect). A few full-color, captioned photographs decorate the text but add little to it. Most pages have a sidebar, colored gold and shaped like a ribbon, that reiterates what is in the text. There isn't enough information on the pages to warrant the sidebars, which are not particularly attention getting. Eminem fans will be disappointed at the lack of substance.--Kathleen Simonetta, Indian Trails Public Library District, Wheeling, IL
