From the spare quarters of a makeshift monastery in downtown Detroit, four religious Brothers and a priest are doing the impossible - working miracles of the sight-to-the-blind, health-to-the-sick variety. People are flocking to this "monastery of St. Stephen" to be cured. But there are rumors of rather more nefarious practices taking place at St. Stephen's: embezzlement, torture, and murder. Father Koesler once again is called on to investigate this disruptive mixture of the sacredand the profane. The idea of monks and priests making miracles goes beyond the canons of any monastic rule or ecclesiastical order; its all-too-venal dark side is perhaps only to be expected. Father Koesler is experienced, but even he has never faced such a pure polarity.
