Dry, boring, facts without the development of personal narrative we have to expect from historical authors in our own times.

I LEARNED MORE ABOUT LORD NORTHCLIFFE THAN I WISHED. PERHAPS HE SIMPLY DOESN'T MEASURE UP/OR DOWN TO WILLIAM RANDOLPH HEARST.

IT IS ALSO HARD TO FIND THE SUFFRAGETTES EXCITING, NOW THAT WE BEEN THROUGH WOMEN'S LIB. BADEN POWEL WAS A MILDLY HUMOROUS
OLD CHARACTER WHO HELPED MILLIONS OF BOYS PUT A BIT OF (AD)VENTURE INTO THEIR LIVES.

BUT THE AUTHOR FAILS BADLY TO UNDERSTAND ARTHUR BALFOUR . ASK YOURSELF, WHEN EITHER BEFORE OR AFTER BALFOUR , HAS A PM HAD AN IQ OF
C. 185? OR BEEN SOMEONE WHO HAD WISHED TO BE A PHILOSOPHER ? OR ONE WHO MANAGED TO BE SO GRACIOUS THAT LESSER MORTALS RESPONDED WITH SUCH FOND AFFECTION ?
WITH RESPECT TO HIS DOUBT. HIS WAS NOT A "REAL" DOUBT, BUT A PREAMBLE TO ARGUING IN AN AN ACCESSIBLE WAY FOR THE EXISTENCE OF GOD
- AT A TIME WHEN SUCH A STANCE WAS FAR FROM INTELLECTUALLY POPULAR. IT WAS NO IDLE EXERCIZE. C.S. LEWIS FOUND THAT BALFOUR OPENED
THE WAY FOR HIM TO BELIEVE IN CHRIST. IN THESE WORKS OF HIS LATER YEARS, BALFOUR FULFILLED HIS DESIRE TO THINK, LECTURE AND WRITE AS A PHILOSOPHER.

SUCH A MAN IS BORN, PERHAPS, EVERY FEW CENTURIES.

THE AUTHOR DOES NOT OFTEN GIVE SUPPORTING EVIDENCE FOR HIS HOSTILE (BUT STILL BEGUILED) CRITICISM OF BALFOUR. RE-ITERATION IS NOT PROOF, NOR
IS QUOTING FROM AUTHORS WHO HAPPEN TO AGREE WITH YOU. THE AUTHOR'S HONESTY SHOWS ITSELF IN HIS INABILITY - WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE - TO RESIST
BALFOUR'S CHARM, KINDNESS AND SUBLIME INDIFFERENCE TO CRITICISM.
