About the Author

Piers Brendon is the author of a dozen books, including biographies of Churchill and Eisenhower, and The Windsors, Hawker of Morwenstow and, most recently, The Dark Valley, a hugely acclaimed history of the 1930s, which are all available in Pimlico. I LEARNED MORE ABOUT LORD NORTHCLIFFE THAN I WISHED. PERHAPS HE SIMPLY DOESN'T MEASURE UP/OR DOWN TO WILLIAM RANDOLPH HEARST.

IT IS ALSO HARD TO FIND THE SUFFRAGETTES EXCITING, NOW THAT WE BEEN THROUGH WOMEN'S LIB. BADEN POWEL WAS A MILDLY HUMOROUS
OLD CHARACTER WHO HELPED MILLIONS OF BOYS PUT A BIT OF (AD)VENTURE INTO THEIR LIVES.

BUT THE AUTHOR FAILS BADLY TO UNDERSTAND ARTHUR BALFOUR . ASK YOURSELF, WHEN EITHER BEFORE OR AFTER BALFOUR , HAS A PM HAD AN IQ OF
C. 185? OR BEEN SOMEONE WHO HAD WISHED TO BE A PHILOSOPHER ? OR ONE WHO MANAGED TO BE SO GRACIOUS THAT LESSER MORTALS RESPONDED WITH SUCH FOND AFFECTION ?
WITH RESPECT TO HIS DOUBT. HIS WAS NOT A "REAL" DOUBT, BUT A PREAMBLE TO ARGUING IN AN AN ACCESSIBLE WAY FOR THE EXISTENCE OF GOD

BALFOUR'S CHARM, KINDNESS AND SUBLIME INDIFFERENCE TO CRITICISM.
