4.0 out of 5 stars Electric Shavers
I must admit that $150 was a lot to gamble on something that I didn't know whether I would like or not. I have been shaving since I was 14 (and that's a long time) I've never been able to shave with a blade razor and have used electric shavers since the earliest Sunbeam and on through Remingtons (several models), Braun, Norelco, etc. I have a VERY difficult beard that...

I have a VERY difficult beard that grows in many directions. It's coarse, and any screen with holes is almost impossible. The Braun came close, but the Norelco with slits as well as holes does a fair job. Well, along comes RotoShave and I have a close shave in places that haven't been smooth in years. The learning curve is steep with the RotoShave, and it takes some getting used to, especially the angle at which it must be held, but it does a great job and I enjoy shaving with cream or gel. Any after shave cream or lotion enhances the experience. I'm a slow shaver, and for me the battery life is good for six shaves. Aside from the somewhat awkward angle necessary when using the shaver, I would give it a 5 star rating.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent Razor, March 11, 2010
This review is from: Emjoi RotoShave AP-3RS Rechargeable Electric Razor (Health and Beauty)
In switching over to the five-blade razor overkill when the cost of the twin blades became too high, my husband noticed a lot more irritability and ingrown hair, regardless of blade age or shaving cream/lotion/oil. Upon researching a better solution we came across the RotoShave by Emjoi. It looked like a cross between a tazer and a torture device, so he was a little skeptical when we opened the package. Following the strict guidelines to not use the Rotoshave on bare skin, he did a test run on his arm with shave cream just to get the feel. Feeling confident after just a few swipes, he moved on to his face. The RotoShave provided a fairly close, even shave with minimal irritation. He did get better results using a thinner shave gel rather than a thick, cream-based shaving lotion, as the thickness tends to coat the blades. Rinsing the unit is effortless, and the two speed settings are welcome if you are particularly overgrown. Of note, this is a razor hybrid with some characteristics of a manual razor and some of an electric one. My husband finds the RotoShave to be less irritating and less pulling then an electric shaver, albeit a little less close than he can get with a manual. He charges the RotoShave every couple of days to ensure good power, and he uses it in the shower exclusively. With an easy learning curve and solid performance, the RotoShave should be on any guy's short list.

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointing, January 18, 2010
This review is from: Emjoi RotoShave AP-3RS Rechargeable Electric Razor (Health and Beauty)
Sorry I had to select one star at all... I'd give it zero.

I've never written a review before, but I was compelled... because this device sucks.
A first ever, I achieved razor burn without actually removing hair. Even in the demo video shows the guy shave and is left with a pretty dark stubble and some redness.

I get a DRAMATICALLY closer shave with my cheap little Gillette Fusion Power. Guess I'm experienced enough, I don't cut myself. If I'm on the run and can live with stubble, I've got a three year old Braun shaver that cuts just as close without the burn. The Emjoi has all the disadvantages of my shaver AND my razor without a close shave.

So, now I have a $120. piece of junk to clutter my cabinet.

Don't waste your money. $120. buys a lot of Fusion replacement blades.

Should have done more research... here's a few others like me...

Bad attempt at a razor/shaver

The RotoShave is not what I expected. I followed instructions and I still ended up with one of the worst shaves and it grabbed my skin. I would not recommend this imitation shaver.

This Product does a Poor Job
Reviewer: Bernard from South Bend Thu Dec 31 2009
I followed the instructions to the tee on how to use this shaver. It took me twice as long to shave and does not do well between the nose and lip.The unit does not have enough power and left my face sore. I will return this unit and not Buy another one.

Not recommended

Cons: Difficult to Clean, Difficult to Use, Irritates Skin, Misses Hairs, Pinches Skin
Bottom Line: not recommended
I was very disappionted in this shaver. I got nasty cuts on my lip and well let's just say another place some men shave. It does not shave any closer or faster than a conventional razor. I have to say a useless invention. I expected more from Emjoi and much more for the $ spent.

2.0 out of 5 stars Roto Shave Review, March 20, 2010

It isn't as easy to use as indicated in the advertising. One must be very well lathered so it isn't uncomfortable. I get a better shave from my old electric shaver. The spaces between the blades become clogged and rinsing it off doesn't clean it properly. Even removing the blade head from the shaver and rinsing doesn't clean the blades completely. Having used the shaver for awhile I'd say I would not buy it had I known how it functioned and shaved.

5.0 out of 5 stars I didn't believe it but the Emjoi RotoShave really does work!, July 22, 2010
This review is from: Emjoi RotoShave AP-3RS Rechargeable Electric Razor (Health and Beauty)
This is my first product review and I did not buy this product from Amazon. It was a gift.

I was very skeptical and did not like my first experience with the product, it felt weird and I was afraid of all those whirling blades. I was terrified that I was going to seriously cut myself. I let it sit in my cabinet for weeks and even tried to return it, but too late. After awhile, I decide to really give it a chance. I ignored the sound and the funny sensation. I tried to use it as I would my normal blade razor... why because it has blades. So I figured straight strokes would work well. Wrong.

Despite the rotating blades... this device works best when you move it around like a rotary razor. Ignore the blades and the funny sensations... It took me about 5 days to really figure it out after I became confident I was not going to cut myself. Now I can shave faster than with a blade and much closer. Once I learned how to angle it for the best cut the redness disappeared.

This device works great but only in the hands of a confident experienced user. Newbies need to be patient, acquire confidence, and give it a week or two to learn a whole new way of shaving. It will pay off. I love this device now.

2 weeks after purchase the battery quit charging on the Roto Shave. I've made 4 attempts at exercising warranty. Each time I've gotten "the check is in the mail" routine. Everytime I am promised a new shaver will be sent shortly. This has been since the 1st week in February. So I am stuck with a product that doesn't work and I am out 150 bucks. STAY AWAY!!!

3/31/10
Despite problems above, I did get good shave, so I ordered a new one from Amazon. Last week Emjoi called and said they stand behind their product and gave me refund on 1st shaver. Discovered possible reason for battery failure. With 1st shaver, I was charging continually. With second shaver, I wait until battery runs down before charging. Am getting 15-20 shaves per charge. Everything is cool and would highly reccomend!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Save Your Money, April 7, 2010
This review is from: Emjoi RotoShave AP-3RS Rechargeable Electric Razor (Health and Beauty)
Save your money. This shaver is not worth the price, or any price.
Look at the sides of the shaver. The Roto blade is recessed. Trying to find an angle at which the blade is effective is an exercise in futility. Just putting this whirling blade close to your face is a bit scary. You think you are going to put your face into a meat grinder. Don't worry. You're not likely to get cut because it won't shave you. I threw my Rotoshaver in the trash.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rotoshave is Everything it Claims to Be!, March 26, 2010
This review is from: Emjoi RotoShave AP-3RS Rechargeable Electric Razor (Health and Beauty)
I am absolutely amazed at how well the Rotoshave works. At first it was kind of weird because it felt like it was pulling but it really wasn't. I almost didn't buy it but I'm glad I did.

In my personal experience the Rotoshave shaves better then a straight razor and I have tried probably 10 different kinds of electric razors in the past as well.

My skin has many abrasions so the fact that this goes right over them without hurting is quite amazing.

I found mine by checking out some reviews over at this blog: [..]

I give this a A++

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good (So far), February 20, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Emjoi RotoShave AP-3RS Rechargeable Electric Razor (Health and Beauty)
Well, I just tried it for the first time.

PRO
It shaves very close with way less irritation than a razor.

CON

Hard to use in down low near the neck and sides. You think that you are shaving and then you realize that all you are doing is sliding the back side of the machine against your skin. The rotating blade can only be used in the opening at the front (no top or back side of the machine).

This makes learning to position the machine somewhat less the intuitive. This is my first try so I'll persevere because of that big Pro at the top of this review.

Also, remember that you must shave against the grain to get the best effect.
