Book Description

February 22, 2011 6 and up1 and up
Emma is Jess's little sister . . . and her dilemma. How can one small girl be sweet, funny, imaginative, playful, and affectionate as well as a clinging vine, brat, tattletale, and nuisance–all at the same time? Why is Jess supposed to be a good big sister while Emma doesn't have to be a good little sister? The highlights and low points of this sibling relationship are insightfully evoked in short and simple poems, some funny, some touching, and all resonant with emotional truth. Every child with a younger sibling will recognize Jess's dilemma and the combination of ambivalence and deep loyalty that is built into the sibling relationship. Nancy Carpenter's graceful illustrations perceptively complement Kristine O'Connell George's agile poems.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

From School Library Journal

Gr 1-4-Jessica shares the struggles of being the big sister in this collection of 34 poignant poems. The fourth grader's three-year-old sister, Emma, vacillates between being sweet and lovable and being Jessica's biggest problem. She wants to be a good sibling, but little sisters can try one's patience. In one poem, Jessica generously allows Emma extra space to draw, but in the entry on the facing page she only grants Emma a "teeny twig" in her family tree. Spring-colored line drawings in pen-and-ink and digital media are filled with engaging details, expressive characters, and lots of humor, and bring the family dynamics to life while the verses build to a climactic situation that brings these youngsters together in a touching way.-Julie Roach, Cambridge Public Library, MA (c) Copyright 2010. 5.0 out of 5 stars Realistic kid-friendly poems, July 2, 2011

This review is from: Emma Dilemma: Big Sister Poems (Hardcover)
This book does a great job describing the range of emotions that a big sibling feels about a little one, from frustration to comfort to just plain silly shared moments. Each individual poem can stand alone, and all together they tell a realistic story that will validate the feelings of an older child in a supportive and family-friendly way.

5.0 out of 5 stars I teared up, April 9, 2011
This review is from: Emma Dilemma: Big Sister Poems (Hardcover)
Emma Dilemma is a smart, funny, true-to-life collection of poems that delves into the complicated relationship between sisters. I saw myself and my sister in many of the poems. By the end of the book I was crying (in a good way) and calling my sister. Kristine O'Connell George has great insight into the relationship between sisters!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent..., May 31, 2011
This review is from: Emma Dilemma: Big Sister Poems (Hardcover)
The tone of this big sister-little sister tale is spot on. Told from point of view of Jess, the older sister, George and Carpenter capture both the tenderness and annoyances of this Beezus and Ramona-esque relationship. The story is told through a series of poems, each capturing different shared experiences in the sisters' lives. In one poem, for example, Emma sits on her sister's shoulders to reach a box that is hidden from both of them only to tattle on her sister after she gets it. The highs and lows of being a big sister will be easily identified by readers with their own "dilemma" at home. When Emma breaks her arm falling from a tree, the overriding love that Jess feels for her sister will also be felt by the readers and might even produce a few tears.
