Book Description

Worth Series in Outstanding Contributions August 1998
Considered Jane Austen's best work, Emma reveals the author's love of laughter and gossip in her wry observations concerning matters of the heart. When Emma sets about matchmaking among her friends and acquaintances, she discovers her own inadequacies in the art. Fortunately, she learns her lesson in time to seize her own chance for true love. Delightfully funny, Emma displays the shrewd wit and delicate irony that made Austen a master of the English novel. Emma's popularity has enjoyed a recent resurgence: a major film in 1996 starring Gwyneth Paltrow; Clueless, the 1995 blockbuster starring Alicia Silverstone (a modern-day interpretation of Emma); and the recent television adaptation by the A&E Channel. Prunella Scales, best known for her role as Sybil in Fawlty Towers, brings Emma vividly alive in this outstanding reading, skillfully demonstrating Austen's mastery of dialogue and character. A Cover to Cover Unabridged Classic. 10 cassettes.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"For classic literature, check out the new "Cover to Cover" series. All are 19th and 20th century works produced in England. They are handsomely packaged in sturdy, decorative cardboard boxes. The series carries the exclusive Royal Warrant from Charles, Prince of Wales." -- The Boston Globe, January 1999

"Generally regarded as the most accomplished of Jane Austen's novels, Emma demonstrates Austen's witty and sophisticated insights into the mating game. This classic is often required in schools, and this outstanding reading brings the story vividly alive. Reader Prunella Scales is particularly well known for her work as Sybil in Fawlty Towers, and she appeared in the film Howard's End and in the television miniseries of Emma. [Scales'] account of dear, garrulous, faithful Miss Bates is masterly." -- Gramophone

"These Cover to Cover tapes offer up a delectable feast for fans of the spoken word. We're talking class act here - from the elegant covers to the accomplished readers...Those of you who recall Prunella Scales, the divine Sybil from Fawlty Towers, will relish her unabridged reading of Jane Austen's Emma." -- Deidre Donahue, USA TODAY, December 3, 1998

From the Back Cover

Emma, originally published in 1815 and deemed Jane Austen's best novel, is a witty satire of English society set within the customary plot: young ladies finding proper husbands. It can be heard as a charming love story, a detective story, and a comically lively picture of English life two hundred years ago. Prunella Scales' delightful reading reveals Austen's mastery of dialogue and character.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prunella Scales if fabulous, September 20, 2002

This is the audio tape to buy. Unless, you dislike Mrs. Bates in the 1997 adaptation of Emma (with Kate Beckinsale)-then you may not like it as the same actress (Prunella Scales) read the entire text. In my opinion she does an excellent job. Of course, you have to really appreciate Jane Austen to want the unabridged version-but presumably you do if you are considering this purchase. It is very entertaining and energetic. You don't find you mind wandering as you might with other more dull readers. I highly recommend it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Marriage as a Reflection of Social Status, October 28, 2002
This review is from: Emma (Worth Series in Outstanding Contributions) (Audio Cassette)
Emma Woodhouse, the heroine is endowed with wealth, good-looks, prestige and is well aware of how clever she is. Anne Taylor, who had been extremely close to both Emma and her father, moves out to live with Mr.Weston. Emma looks for a new friend and becomes acquainted with the 17-year old, illegitimate girl Harriet. Emma attempts to aid Harriet with a series of disastrous schemes to prove the girl to be of worthy parentage and deserving of a good man. In doing so, Emma prevents Harriet from marrying Robert Martin who despite being an eligible farmer is deemed by young Woodhouse to be beneath Harriet. Emma is the story of a self-styled protagonist's who lacks self-knowledge. Along the way during the novel there is much in the way of heartbreak, romance and detail about subtle character. There are many themes and symbols characterized in this novel including Marriage as a reflection of Social Status in where Emma is structured around a number of marriages recently completed in each case. Another theme is the confined nature of women's existence, and Self Interest as a cause of Blindness. The novel offers critical illustration of the ways in which personal biases and disires blind objective judgment. The novel is a very amusing and wonderful depiction of the workings of a selfless precocious twenty-year-old.
