Book Description

February 2002 Avalon Historical Romance
Emma Maureen Cummins is fleeing from an overbearing father and the prospect of a loveless marriage in Atlanta, Georgia. She's intrigued by stories of the Oklahoma land rush the previous year, 1889, and buys a train ticket to Oklahoma. After all, that's where the excitement is. Trouble arises the moment she steps inside the general store in Guthrie, coming face to face with the sheriff, who has received a telegram to be on the lookout for a tall blond from Georgia.

Jed Thomas just came to town to buy supplies for his homestead. The sheriff asked a strange lady a question just as she begins mouthing the words, "Help me, please," in Jed's direction. In half an hour Jed was married to the woman and wondering just how in the world it had all come about.

They're married on paper only but slowly come to realize through daily living, arguments, and compromises that they've fallen in love. However, Jed doesn't think a blue-eyed Southern belle could ever really love a dirt farmer like him. And Emma thinks Jed will always love Anna Marie, the woman with whom he almost had an agreement before he married her.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

When her father insists that she marry a man she despises, Emma Cummins packs her bags and flees her family's Georgia plantation for Oklahoma. After stepping off the train in Gutherie and immediately attracting the attention of the town's sheriff, Emma does the only thing she can think of: she pretends to be the fiancee of the first man she sees, local farmer Jed Thomas. Much to his surprise, Jed plays along with Emma's little game, but before they know what's happening, Emma and Jed wind up getting married to one another in front of the local justice of the peace. Emma plans on only staying a few days with Jed before divorcing him, but once she meets the four young children Jed is raising, Emma's future veers off in a direction she never would have expected. Avalon debuts a new line of historical romances with Emma's surprise choice, which is an excellent choice for libraries where gentle, old-fashioned historicals are in demand. John Charles

5.0 out of 5 stars EMMA'S FOLLY, April 18, 2002
This review is from: Emma's Folly (Avalon Historical Romance) (Hardcover)
I have read every single one of Carolyn Brown's books. I loved all of them, but Emma's Folly is my favorite. I don't know if it's because I'm a big historical romance fan and this is her first historical book. Or if it's just because this book is written so well. You really begin to know the characters and feel as if you are right there with them. My heart cried when Emma had to tell Molly goodbye. And a few times I wanted to whop Jed Thomas right upside his fool head! Sometimes you read a book and feel like you're just reading a story ~ when you read Emma's Folly you feel the story way down deep inside your soul and it's hard to read the last page and let go. I would recommend anyone read this book!! I give it two thumbs up and both big toes up too! :0)I look forward to reading the books to come that tell about some of the other people who appeared in Emma's Folly. And if Jed Thomas pulls any more ornery stuff I might just whop him upside the head after all. :0)

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical romance at its best, August 17, 2002
This review is from: Emma's Folly (Avalon Historical Romance) (Hardcover)
If you like historical romances, Emma's Folly is one of the best. Carolyn Brown does a fine job bringing a character set in the past to life for a contemporary reader. And, it never hurts to learn. Carolyn does a fine job of teaching the reader about important events relevant to the character's time. Read this book -- you'll love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Emma's Folly ( by Carolyn Brown, April 16, 2002

This review is from: Emma's Folly (Avalon Historical Romance) (Hardcover)
I think that this book should be given a rating of 10 plus. I can not begin to tell you how it made my day when I finished reading it. It was so GREAT that I read it again. And I am going to purchase it to go with my collection of other books I have, with this one being number one. It leaves you wishing that the story could continue. After reading about little Molly and the way she clung to Emma, I awoke the next morning wondering where my Emma was. I laughed, I cried, I wanted to push Matthew into another county. I am so glad the way Emma handled Anne Marie, too. I wanted to tell Jed to stop being so stubborn. I even wanted to send him a telegram to get to Atlanta and bring Emma home where she belonged. These characters leave you wishing that you were there with them. And the part during the tornado. If you have ever been in that situation, you are as much sitting on edge while you are reading that chapter as if you are in your own cellar waiting for the storm to pass. Ms. Brown is an excellent writer and should get thumbs up all the way to heaven. If Oprah ever needed to find a book that truly expressed love, devotion and a caring spirit that touches your heart, not to mention, have you awake with the characters still floating in your mind, she should read Emma's Folly. My goodness, Carolyn Brown is terrific!!!! If you don't read this book, you have missed something wonderful. It is a breath of fresh air. And we need that everyday. I can hardly wait to read the others ones.
