More About the Author

Veda Boyd Jones is the author of 42 books with traditional publishers, some for adult markets, most for children. Publishers include Scholastic, Barbour, McGraw-Hill, Lerner, Lucent, Chelsea House, Wendy Pye, Avalon, and Seedling. In addition, she's had over 500 short stories or articles published in magazines (Woman's World, The Writer, Harris' Farmer's Almanac, Highlights, Cricket, Humpty Dumpty and many others). Now she's ventured into the e-world with Joe's Ghost on Kindle.

She says, "I am never bored when waiting in a doctor's or dentist's office, since I just turn on my imagination and invent characters to go along with the people sitting in chairs around me. But that's when I'm thinking of fiction.
I write a good deal of nonfiction for children. This is an entirely different way of writing. Ninety percent of my time is spent researching and documenting facts. Kids believe what they see in print, and my job is to make sure it is accurate."

4.0 out of 5 stars When you believe in God, good things may really happen, April 15, 2006
Twelve-year-old Emma Farley worries if her family will survive the cholera outbreak that was caused by the terrible flooding of the Ohio River. Emma wonders if her dreams of becoming an animal doctor will ever come true, because in Cincinnati in 1832, girls have to become wives and mothers instead of having careers. Emma tries to keep her dreams and her family alive during this hard time. What will happen to the people of Cincinnati and how will they ever get this mess cleaned up? Find out in this exciting story called Emma's Secret.

Emma's Secret is one of the many wonderful books in the Sisters In Time series. Emma's Secret kept me up all night long and I liked reading about this time period in history. Emma's Secret is a faith-based book that shows you how sometimes when you believe in God, good things may really happen. I think that this story could be improved by having more adventure and additional things happen. I really enjoyed reading this book and I recommend it to kids ages 9-12.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT, March 23, 2011
This is one of four books I have read from this series. I love this series! I really enjoy historical fiction and the characters that the author has developed. Someday I hope to become a writer and she has been an inspiration to me with her books.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring..., April 23, 2008
I wanted to like this book, because I've been looking for books for girls my age that have a good, Christian message... but this book was excruciatingly boring.

It was very slow up until a certain part, but by the time you get to the exciting stuff, you're attention is completely lost. It seems to drag on a little bit... because the writer keeps mentioning the vague "secret" until it is revealed at the end of the book. You're expecting the secret to be very exciting because of all the little mentionings of the "secret", but it just doesn't add up.

Another thing that I've noticed about these books is that in every book, SOMEONE has to die! I understand that they are trying to make the books realistic because back in those times many people died of hardship and disease, but they play it up so much that it's kind of depressing.

If you want a good series to read, try the "Anne of Green gables" series by LM Montgomery. They are wonderful!
