Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A boy and his dog create a record-setting-sized snowball that makes them celebrities in their town. "Guevara's pictures are as droll as Miller's puckish story," said PW. Ages 4-8. (Nov.)

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-- When a long-awaited snow day finally arrives, Emmett, aided by his dog, rolls a snowball around his yard. As the ball becomes larger, friends help push. It finally becomes so large that it accidently blocks the door to the candy store. Townspeople join in and push the ball into the town square, where it is larger than than the statue of President Fillmore, thus setting a world record and drawing visitors from nearby towns. Using a wise economy of language, this unassuming story perfectly captures a common fantasy among children--to do something BIG, and worthy of a world record. An ideal complement to this slightly offbeat story are Guevara's stylized cartoon illustrations, executed in watercolor and detailed with charcoal pencil. The warm blues, greens, and pinks of winter clothing contrast dramatically with the cool whites and blue shadows of the snow. Emmett's friends and the townspeople represent a cross section of racial and cultural backgrounds with a realistic balance of male and female characters. The book is eye catching and suitable for sharing aloud; children will find a great deal to like about Emmett and his amazing snowball. --Denise Anton Wright, Library Book Selection Service, Inc., Bloomington, IL

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for kids and adults!, May 31, 2000
This review is from: Emmett's Snowball (Henry Holt Young Readers) (Paperback)
Emmett's Snowball is a warm-hearted and funny book. Sweet but never cloying, the story is engaging and the characters are delightfully realistic, with none of the caricatures so often found in children's books. The writing style makes it especially fun to read aloud, but it's also good for a quiet read by oneself. The beautiful pictures complement the excitement and humor of the story.
