Update 12/31/2014 ************************

Still no cavities. Still the cleanest teeth I have ever had. Still using fluoride toothpaste. I do now also use a soft toothbrush for an initial brushing. I have been doing this for about 6 months and it does help with the mineral buildup inside the bottom front teeth, right along the gum line. I know the bacteria are thriving on that brush. I follow that up with the Emmident. Yes, I probably spend more time brushing my teeth then most people. Whatever.

Update 5/2014 ***********************************

Still love this toothbrush. I realize it takes longer to "brush" my teeth, but I have learned to live with. Takes me about 12 minutes at night with the 10 second hold per location. The staining was a bit more at my dental checkup a month or so ago. But still no cavities and my teeth still feel incredible after using the Emmi-dent. I spent a bit more time wrapping the dental floss around the bottom teeth, because there does tend to be more mineral build-up on the inside of the front 4 teeth. The mineral deposits pop off easy enough and the extra flossing appears to be doing a great job at that.

Update 2/2013... Just had my second dental cleaning, and this one was the first cleaning where I have used the Emmi-dent tooth brush for the whole time between visits. The hygienist was very impressed. I had very little tartar build-up, and really only on the inside of the lower 4 front teeth. I could actually see a little bit of it myself so I knew there was some there.

Interesting product. Seems to clean the teeth properly. They feel clean to the tongue and seem whiter. It takes a bit of time to get used to the fact that you don't brush and it takes a bit longer to brush your teeth following their recommended 5 sec minimum per pair of teeth.

What I don't like about this product is the fact that you need their special "ultrasonic toothpaste" to get all the advertised benefits. At around 6 dollars for 75 ml (about 3/4 of a normal toothpaste tube) that you can only get from their web site, it's expensive and too limited in it's availability.

As for the toothbrush, same deal. Every 3 months,15 dollars for a pair of brush heads that you get from the web site.

Finally, the technology itself. They claim they use ultrasound that don't really require a toothbrush. A "sponge" would have been ok, but they claim they had to stick to what people are used to in order to get better acceptance. They even go as far as generating a vibration of the toothbrush for the same reason. But get this: you need to change the toothbrush every three months because "ultrasound is less effective traveling through a worn toothbrush". Hum...

As for the special toothpaste, it supposedly creates "nano bubbles" that "implode" and thus clean more deeply. I'm sceptical, sorry.

I really hope this product gets wide acceptance and really delivers on it's promises. But for now, I think it's another strategy of another company trying to get our money.

This product does what it says it will do. It does take a few days to get used to not brushing.

As for my routine... twice a day I start with a quick manual brush over the teeth, gums and tongue. I then floss and use a water pic. Finally I use the Emmi as per their instructions. The instructions say to use 2 pea sized portions of their toothpaste. I do this, but start with one pea sized portion for the upper teeth, then use another pea sized portion when ready for the lower teeth. This allows for better distribution of the paste over all of the teeth in my opinion.

After each use of the Emmi, my teeth feel as though I have just come from the dentist after a good cleaning. My teeth feel very clean and polished.

As for the cost of Emmi toothpaste and brushes... it's very inexpensive for what it offers.

My Braun electric toothbrush is now retired.

This product definately gets 5 stars from me!

July 25, 2013 update:

This is Tracy (my husband wrote the initial review, I am writing the follow up. After learning the Emmi-Dent toothpaste was not gluten free (I had reacted to it), my husband spoke with their customer service, and we were advised that regular toothpaste interferes with the ultrasound, so I should use just water. I have a short attention span... This process required me to also brush, as I wanted my mouth to feel fresh. In addition, my brush began to rust. My husband continued using the Emmi-dent with their toothpaste and his brush did not rust. I figure it is because I am using it without their toothpaste. I did not see the same improvement with my gums anymore. It seems the Emmi-dent toothpaste is critical to the results. I no longer use the Emmi-dent. I use sensodyne toothpaste with a conventional brush and I use hydrogen peroxide as my mouthwash. :(

I still think this is a great product, and I would have continued using it if the toothpaste were gluten free, so i could gain the full benefit of the ultrasound.

ORIGINAL REVIEW, written June 14, 2012:

I wanted to hold off on a review of this product, until I had used it for a while. So 3 weeks later I feel that I have enough information to be able to write an objective review.

So the reason that I bought this toothbrush is because my wife has celiac disease (best explanation is that she is allergic to wheat/gluten). One of the consequences of this disease is that her ability to uptake calcium is severely limited. This consequence makes her teeth week and the enamel thin. She has lots of dental problems and they will only get worse as she gets older. Because dentist visits are expensive, I wanted to extend the time between visits.
