This Book Showed Me How to Make Money My Friend, Not My Enemy, July 7, 2008
This review is from: The Emotion Behind Money: Building Wealth from the Inside Out (Hardcover)
There are lots of money books out there. I personally have probably read them all. They tell you how to make money, invest money, and even how to spend your money (buy real estate, buy gold coins, etc.). Even with all this great advice, my relationship to money was dysfunctional at best. The money came in fast, went out faster, and certainly did not make me feel capable of pursuing my dreams with confidence - as a good, stable relationship should make you feel!
Wearily, I picked up The Emotion Behind Money, not really expecting to find what I was after --the secret to getting better at "the money part" of life. And yet, that is exactly what I did find! At the end, I joyfully closed the book, took a deep breath, and started reading it all over again. But this time around I did all the exercises in pen, not just in my head. I could write in this book, because no one else is getting my copy...it's a keeper!
Julie Murphy Casserly delivers on her promise, and how! She tells it like it is, sparing nobody, especially herself. The invisible is made visible. At the end of the book, you will know where the weakest links are in your money chain, why they are there, and best of all, how to change the way you feel about and relate to money, so that money will stick around and not "desert" you. I also loved the self-quizzes and revealing interactive exercises. When I starting doing them, I was numb to what I really wanted my money to help me do, and now I know--as I said, the invisible made visible. If you do these exercises, I think you too will rediscover your dreams, and how to set up a financial support system so that you can afford to do what you love, and not "someday" but sooner rather than later.
Throw out the other money books. This is the only one you'll need. Just the chapter on "The Crabs in Your Bucket" is life-changing. I could go on and on...I am that excited that someone has actually applied psychology to the most significant relationship we have besides our significant other. Well, actually, your money IS your significant other.
That's my honest, heartfelt recommendation. Read it!

Such a healing, transformative, and warm feeling -, November 28, 2008
This review is from: The Emotion Behind Money: Building Wealth from the Inside Out (Hardcover)
I'm about halfway through this book, and I am so glad I bought this book! Initially, I was resistant, and felt I had no connection to this book whatsoever, and the diagrams and explanations felt like another math-whiz's outlook on life which the artsy-me could not really enjoy. But I went through some events in my personal life, and I resolved to really get down to my Emotions - I wanted to CONQUER my emotions for good - and came back to reading this book - and WOW!!! this is the BEST book ever for me to heal my emotions around money. I'm so fascinated by how gentle yet holistic the writing is - I've spent a good fortune getting all kinds of books in the past 2 decades - and I've never come across anything this "integrative". A lot of the books I bought regarding finances - kept telling me - you have to stop debting - you have to track your expenses - you need to work on your affirmations - blah blah blah - but I never fully had that warm gentle support I craved. I come from Korea, and it was especially helpful for me that the author came from Irish background - the "crabs" analogy was what made me buy the book in the first place - and the many instances the author shares her own experiences regarding her family of origin has helped me immensely to get clear on my relationship to family, my spending, my emotions, and money. The real bonus in the book, that makes me respect the author even more - is the inclusion of chakras and how body-spirit-family-emotions are all connected. This is by far the most comprehensive book I've come across regarding money. And the really neat thing is she explains enough for me to touch upon the various related topics to money, without getting TOO nitty gritty on it. She gives enough insights to chakra that relate directly to money and emotion, and how body gets affected by our choices, but she doesn't spend a whole chapter talking about it. I find the analogies she gives very easy to grasp, and apt for the concept she is trying to explain; the examples from her own life and her clients make the reading a lot more enjoyable and warm; the exercises she gives have given me a lot of self-awareness. I was able to face some of my dark and negatives emotions behind money and uncover my behavioral pattern; and I was totally blown away by the section where she says that money is a part of energy, and when you make choices to use them both towards acheiving our goals it has an even bigger impact. I had always seen money as something of a separte entity; something elusive, and something that brought a lot of uncomfortable realities to surface (this is what I became aware of!). I can't wait to finish the other half of this book. All in all, I really want to say Thank You! to the author. She is truly gifted - and I heartily agree with her - she is really good at helping people!!! I have found a lot of awareness, compassion, humour, and validation in this book, and I hope others will find their bliss too. Many many thanks.
