3.0 out of 5 stars McBride's Vocals Are In League Of Their Own
Martina McBride's amazing vocals take center stage in her fifth album, "Emotion." The album boasted four charted singles (all with different messages). Many say this album shows a level of inconsistency unusual for the seasoned veteran, but McBride has a unique and strong story-telling talent -- appreciated mostly by women.

I was almost afraid to buy this CD after reading all the low ratings it received here on Amazon.com. But I went against my fears and bought it anyway, and I'm really glad I did. This is a good CD, and I don't understand why people reviewed it so badly. True, it isn't quite as good as Evolution and Wild Angels, which I also own, but I don't see where Martina has really changed all that much. Those of you who said this album isn't country must not have been listening to country radio lately. The style of music Martina sings on "Emotion" is what's popular in country music right now. We need to realize that country music is changing. It's moving away from the traditional sound. Martina is just going with the flow. Good songs on "Emotion" are I Love You, Make Me Believe, Love's The Only House, Anything and Everything, and This Uncivil War. The rest of the songs on the CD were acceptable, also, but they didn't quite stand out like the others. If you like the style of country music that's popular right now, you'll love this CD. You may also like Chely Wright "Single White Female" and Faith Hill "Breathe". Check these albums out, and buy Martina McBride "Emotion" today! You'll love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars got me hooked!, May 4, 2000

This review is from: Emotion (Audio CD)
i was flipping channels the other night when i came to a beautiful woman with beautiful blue eyes singing like i haven't heard anyone else sing before in my life. i naturally stopped to watch her whole performance and it turns out to be martina mcbride on the acm awards. i'm not much of a country music listener but after i heard this tiny lady with the big voice i ran out the very next morning on my way to work to buy this cd. i must say that i am very impressed. besides having a voice beyond description, it's so powerfuls and soulful, she rocks. the song loves the only house is such a powerful song and it's my time rocks big time. i'd heard i love you before but there's no way to tell the vocal ability of this lady by that song and the song there you are is simply awe inspiring. i've gotta say that i am now hooked on martina and would recommend this cd to anyone who appreciates an amazing voice and good songs. i love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars All I can say is WOW!, February 29, 2000
This review is from: Emotion (Audio CD)
People will degrade this cd because its not typical country. So what? "Emotion" contains super catchy tunes. Yes, it sounds like pop, but it don't matter, all the songs are great! Tunes like "I Love You", "Loves The Only House", "Its My Time", and "Do What You Do" are very uplifting wheras songs like "This Uncivil War" and "I Ain't Going Nowhere" are very soulful. This cd has a great mixture of songs. Each song is musically inspiring. I highly recommend this fantastic cd!

5.0 out of 5 stars Martina does it again with "Emotion"!!!, October 15, 2004

Martina McBride's "Emotion" album contains many pop country elements, but is still nonetheless a great album. Here's how I rate each song. (out of a 5 star scale)

1) Do What You Do- good song, but takes a little to get used to.
(4 stars)

2) Anything's Better than Feeling the Blues- good songs, good lyrics. (4 stars)

3) I Love You- great song, Martina's most successful song on the country charts, spending 5 weeks in the top spot. (5 stars)

4) Make Me Believe- great song about whether one's love is true or not.... i love the lyric "but it's hard to start a fire without a spark (5 stars)

5) Love's the Only House- this song will draw a strong connection to your heart. The song is spectacular and speaks the truth... love is TRULY the only house big enough for all the world's pain. The video to this song is very touching as well. Go Martina! (5 stars)

6) There You Are- a perfect wedding song... She hold the "are" note for at least 12+ seconds near the end. (5 stars) If you hear this song LIVE, she holds the note 15 seconds!!!! (so LIVE this song will be 6 stars/5 stars!!!!)

7) It's My Time- the first song that I ever heard Martina perform live in the AMA awards... she rocked the house down with this song... She also holds a 10 second note at this song. Love that range of hers. (5 stars)

8) I Ain't Goin' Nowhere- I like this song and its message about being there for a significant other. (5 stars)

9) Anything and Everything- the lyrics and Martina's gentle vocal performance on this song are perfection. (5 stars)

10)From the Ashes- another standout song on this album. She holds some high notes in this one too. (5 stars)

11) Goodbye- a solid performance, I llike how Martina goes lower and softer in some parts of the song. (4 stars)

12) This Uncivil War- the best song on the album!!!! AMAZING!!!! Written by Gretchen Peters, the writer of Martina's career hit "Indepedence Day." A very emotional song, which defines the title of the album. The ending is a real treat as well. (6 stars!)

This album is definitely worth purchasing!!! It helps complete my collection of Martina's albums!

5.0 out of 5 stars MARTINA ROCKS!, March 22, 2000
This review is from: Emotion (Audio CD)
I saw Martina in concert last summer and she blew my mind. The woman can SING! It's rare to see people really get up and dance at a country show, but I sure did. It was the first time I heard "Love's the Only House". It's a truly wonderful song. She is an incredible performer. I've never see such a powerful voice full of such awesome emotion come from such a tiny person. Her latest CD (as well as some of ther other titles) plays in my home regularly. So many of the songs really touch my life in a way that's very rare. EMOTION is a truly great album!

5.0 out of 5 stars MARTINA HAS WON ME OVER......., March 20, 2000
By
This review is from: Emotion (Audio CD)
I promised a friend of mine, who is a huge Martina fan, that I would go with her to a concert if Martina ever came close enough for us to go and this weekend we went. I found out why my friend is such a huge fan. I've seen just about all of the female country singers who are out today, Trisha Yearwood, Faith Hill, Shania Twain, Reba McEntire and Jo Dee Messina to name a few, and without a doubt Martina is the BEST! She made a fan out of me within the first 15 minutes of her show. Her voice is phenomonal and she is a great entertainer. I bought this cd at the show and I love it. My favorite song is "There You Are" and when she does this one live the hair on the back of my neck stands up. There is no one to compare her to because she is a one of a kind talent. I also love the upbeat, fun song "I Love You" as well as the anthem "It's My Time". She opens her show with that one and at the end when you think you've heard it all she closes with "Love's The Only House", "Whatever You Say", "A Broken Wing" and finally "Independence Day". If you want a great cd buy this one and if you want to see a show that is nothing short of amazing, see Martina live.

3.0 out of 5 stars McBride's Vocals Are In League Of Their Own, July 25, 2001
By
This review is from: Emotion (Audio CD)
Martina McBride's amazing vocals take center stage in her fifth album, "Emotion." The album boasted four charted singles (all with different messages). Many say this album shows a level of inconsistency unusual for the seasoned veteran, but McBride has a unique and strong story-telling talent -- appreciated mostly by women.

"I Love You" is a wonderfully written love song that highlights the bubbly, sparkling new feelings one feels when they have fallen for someone. "It's My Time" has a great message of blossoming into being your own person and realizing it right now (hence the title).

Other highlights are the other two released singles, the plight of those less fortunate in "Love's The Only House," and the romantic "There You Are" that introduces a soothing piano introduction. Different beats coincide in "I Ain't Goin Anywhere" and "Goodbye."

Crisp country sound in varied beats showcase McBride as a true vocal talent -- making it worth the purchase of the CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, November 30, 1999

Martina croses the line into POP on this one. If your deep into country and twang, you may not like it. The songs are well chosen and very clean in their presentation. Try it, bet you'll like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most incredible voice in country music!, April 26, 2000
By
Eileen Brown (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Emotion (Audio CD)
Not only does Martina have the most amazing voice in any genre, but she has chosen some of her most powerful songs ever for this album. Her strength lies not only in the power of her voice, but also in her ability to interpret a song. Moreover, Martina's experiences in the two years since Evolution can be seen on this album, most notably the influence of Lilith Fair. "Good Bye" and "This Uncivil War" are heartwrenching, and "From The Ashes," easily the most intense performance on the album, will leave you speechless and breathless. "Anything's Better Than Feeling The Blues" is delightfully quirky, and "Anything And Everything" is a song one can easily imagine Martina singing to her daughters as a lullaby. "Love's The Only House" is an explosive five-minute commentary on the times we live in. "I Ain't Going Nowhere" and "Make Me Believe" are up-tempo numbers that would both make great singles, each with a positive message. "It's My Time," a song about taking charge of one's life and not letting any more time go to waste, is Martina at her full-tilt finest. "There You Are" is a soft-yet-intense love ballad with a hint of something almost spiritual. "Do What You Do" also carries a positive message, to be yourself and not compromise yourself in conforming to others' standards--much as Martina has done her herself in not simply making an Evolution II. Finally, the infamous "I Love You." Well, contrary to what Mr. Kasten thinks, I find this to be a rather cleverly-written take on the sheer bliss of newfound love. As a college graduate with a degree in English, I enjoy how the writers convey that euphoria with an array of 93-cent adverbs all leading up to those three little words at the end. Besides, when did it become a crime to record a song that's simply happy and fun to sing? Overall, while Evolution will always be my favorite Martina McBride album, I emphatically recommend Emotion. It does carry a strong pop/rock influence, but the songs and the performances have far more depth than is often the case with pop-laced country. If you're looking for traditional country, buy an Alan Jackson or Patty Loveless CD. But if you're open-minded enough to recognize that true talent transcends all genre rules and boundaries, you will enjoy and appreciate this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHAT A SINGER, WHAT A VOICE!, March 13, 2000
By
This review is from: Emotion (Audio CD)
I saw Martina on the Donny and Marie show on Thursday and I was so impressed that I went out that day and bought her cd Emotion and boy am I glad I did! I had already heard the song "I Love You" on the pop station I listen to but I had never heard "Love's The Only House" before. I fell in love with it immediately as I have with most of the songs on this cd. "There You Are" simply blows me away, her voice rivals that of Celine Dion and it's such a beautiful song. Also the song "It's My Time" is on of my favorites. Martina seems to sing alot of songs about strong women or women strong enough to get out of a bad situation, which I really identify with. I highly recommend this cd.
