My wife and I have two larger Emotion Temptation kayaks for two years now, and found them to be well made and excellent in the water. We wanted to get two smaller kayaks for when our grandchildren so that we could all go out together. The Spitfire 8 is as well designed as the larger Temptation. I had them out in the water this weekend, paddling the Temptation and then the Spitfire 8 to compare the differences. I found the Spitfire 8 tracked well (even though it was windy and choppy) and was very maneuverable. I would not get this product as a primary kayak for an adult of my size (5' 11", 205 lbs) but it will certainly be great for the children. I do look forward though in taking it out into the surf. I think the maneuverability will make it quite fun.

One caution, the kayak is shipped simply in a plastic bag. On the first delivery, both kayaks were badly damaged and had to be returned. Amazon was gracious and fast in the return and reorder. The second shipment was in perfect condition, though I made sure the delivery company remained while I opened the bags and inspected the kayaks. Don't let the shipper leave or sign for the kayaks until you inspect them.

For me this Spitfire kayak has been the best...Ok it is my one and only so far. On my 60th Birthday I bought this Kayak had read the reviews so was prepared for what they said. I walked into REI and said if you can fit that in my Toyota Matrix I am leaving with it! They did not even wince put it in my car and it has been the most amazing journey ever since. This Spitfire Kayak has taken me into Morro Bay into the back bay salt marshes and along the Monterey Coast. I am a science teacher so know how to watch the tides and be safe. It goes in and out of my car very easily. I put down a tarp and rubber mats so it doesnt slide. I have a cushion so I can be out all day and I pull my life preserver down behind my back so I can sit upright. NO back problems with a Spitifre sit on top. I have scraped it on occasion so far no leaks. My dog goes with me. I have a safety lite on my vest and I carry my cell phone in aplastice bag. Have emergency supplies. Do to my back I cannot lift kayaks on my car even with racks. This kayak has giving me the freedom of the sea. Have had a Dolphin visit me and a sea otter try to jump in the boat. You scoot them away with your paddle. I f u havnt guessed I am med hght so also got a Kids paddle this is great for those of moderate weight and height. I love my kayak and have gotten new and old friends into kayaking some have even bought there own. One friend couldnt swim and now has her own kayak. Kayaking is the best. I bought this 4 years ago. Enjoy! I port over short sandy distances and can lift this my myself. I put a rope on the front and back and have not had anything come off it. Seat is comfy.

I got 2 of these for what else, getting on the water. I was skeptical about them because other reviewers say it is poor tracking. I don't know that that noise is about...perhaps the problem is the person operating it. I find that these are highly maneuverable, therefore wicked fun in rapids and surf. I can paddle hard in a straight line all Hawaii 5-0 style and it tracks fine...I can build up a wake and hammer this thing and it stays straight...so I really do not understand the reviews. Do you know you need to look far ahead and modulate the power strokes correctly left and right ? Have you only been using long kayaks with rudders which compensate for poor paddling technique ? perhaps... If you have sloppy technique the Spitfire 8 will reveal it. Yes for sure as soon as you stop paddling it will start to turn, but this means it turns on a dime and ...fun in rapids and surf.

anyhow, really happy with these little 8 footers, they are easy to haul around and drop in any water, and very easy to navigate up into tight coves and underbrush and they turn easily...probably the ultimate 'adventure and poke around the shoreline' kayak going...

This is a beginner kayak, so it's stable enough for 100-210lbs (My kid is 100; I am 160; my friends are both 170 and 210, respectively). The tracking is terrible. I kayak the Rock Springs run and Wekiva River and with a little bit of current, the kayak goes sideways and cannot be controlled easily. I have a 8' lifetime and tracks better but it's much slower. I was recommended by the Wekiva Springs kayak handler an Ascend, but I have personally not being in one, even though the reviews are decent. Anyway, Ocean Kayak is a heavier feel boat and more professional and much better at tracking than Spitfire. You get what you paid for.

Update: July 2013.
Made a rudder for about $10 out of aluminum for the Spitfire. I wasn't going to pay $100 for a piece of plastic you can make yourself! Result: Much better kayak and I am getting a second one! Got the idea and measurements from the internet. Rudder is about 10 inches long and 4 inches wide and it's fixed on back of kayak with homemade fixture. Problem of tracking solved!

I like this kayak, but it needs so much work to be useful. The seat back is made of very flimsy plastic that after an hour flops over backwards. However, the CSS seat fits fairly well in its place, so add on $50 for a quality seat that actually works. The side handles are useless, so add on another $20 for good handles unless you have an 8ft wingspan and can grab the front and back handle at the same time. Its tracks quite well for only being 8ft, i'm able to flip into eddies quick and able to even head up stream if it isn't flowing more than 3-4mph. A milk crate almost fits in the back, I took a heat gun and 4lb sledge to a milk crate and got it to fit, in place the cover just barely fits over it. Its the perfect river kayak to get me to all the best fishing hole, but at 150lbs, that seat was a joke.
