CARL TAKES IT BACK TO THE OLD SCHOOL,

This review is from: Emotional (Audio CD)
Bad Boy strikes again seems like they are on the right track in gaining crediablity once again with the release of Black Rob's Life Story .. Now the release Carl Thomas debut Emotional.. So far this year in R n b you might have a cd that you have to continue hittin the fast forward button . There are only two c.d's so far this year you dont have to do it Joe's My Name Is JOE and Carl Thomas EmotionalCarl Thomas has an exceptional vocalist you have heard him on other Bad Boys artist release.. Now he finally steps out on his own with an cd that is sentinemental, Soulful... Carl's style will remind you of the early 70's- mid 70's .. The days when the topic was true love he sings about.. If there is a flaw with this cd it's some of the production but over all .. Majority of the songs here will make you forget some of it's flaws.. This still deserves 5 stars.. Stand out tracks I Wish Cold Cold World Summer Rain Lady Lay Your Body Special Lady If you like taste of old-school romantic soul this is the cd for you.. This brother going to be around for sometime to come..

Emotional is what u will be after this..new R+B from BadBoy!,
By I.B. (Westampton, NJ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Emotional (Audio CD)
This new one from Badboy is tight and pushing this up by a month was no mistake. Poeple might recognize a lot of beats and tunes here because some of them are hooks from old songs(as we know badboy for doing). Overall it's half and half between old and new beats and sounds. The ones that he re-did have a new sound or beat to it so it sounds almost like a diferent song. Let me break down the cd for u: Tracks: 1- This track is the gospel intro where he sings thanks to god. Good intro. He is like the male version of faith evans2- Emotional is one of the best tracks on the cd. I think it's the next single. The bass line and smooth beats will have u playing this over a nd over. Tight 3- This track is the reason I got this cd. Another smooth tight one where he plays the piano and talks about someone who he wishes he could be with. Lyrics and beats are tight. this will grow on u. 4-Another interlude. It could have been a song. Him playing piano 5-This song reminds me a lil bit of the song "poison" from bell biv devoe in the beginging when it starts up. Another tight track..the most hip/hop track on the album 6- This is a tight slow jam. Sounds like something from back in the day. 7-Another interlude. You can't really understand what he's saying. It could have done without it but it builds up to the next song. 8-Anyone who knows biggie will recognize the beat instatly. This is another hip-hop track. It's aiight. 9-Another slow jam. It's aight 10-This track is a tight slow Jam. Talking about how cold the world is but long as he's with his girl..it's aiight 11-Another interlude..sounds like spoken word poetry. U will think of "Love Jones" the movie when u hear this. 12-Fastest track on the album. This is another tight one. 13- This track right here? Betas out every slow jam on the album. Tightest slow jam track. This is for getting next to that special somebody and just chillin. 14-A laid back ballad. Makes u think back. It's good 15-This sounds like something form sade, but it's a tight track and I think this might be out in the summer for the single. This is another tight track. 16- This track is another tight slow jam and the lyrics are deep. My friend turned me on to this track and now we both trip anytime we hear it. 17-This sounds like it could be an R.kelly jam but It goes into a timberland beat. Over all it's a smooth song. Overall this is a smooth album that u could play on repeat. Carl is bringing badboy up again in R+B with this one. Get it!

...... A very "Emotional" debut,
By J. Highsmith (Mitchellville, Maryland United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Emotional (Audio CD)
Can Puff Daddy actually have a chance to "Shyne" again? That is the question a lot of people are asking. Well, if Black Rob's "Life Story" and Carl Thomas's "Emotional" are a preview of things to come, then Puffy might just get a chance to laugh again. On "Emotional" you can tell that Carl Thomas is a good writer and you can also tell that he's been through a lot of the things that are on this CD. "Emotional" is a throwback to what today's r&b artists have to offer. This is what separates Carl Thomas' debut from most other r&b acts. The highlights of this CD are the 1st single "I Wish", "Emotional", "My Valentine", Lady Lay Your Body" and "Hey Now". The whole CD can be played in its entirety so you don't have to worry about a fast forward button. After hearing this CD you'll wonder why Carl Thomas didn't come out with an album any sooner. This CD, as well as, Joe's "My Name Is Joe" are the best r&b CDs out right now.

Now u know something's good, when you stay up past midnight with the headphones on listenin' and hitting the repeat button!I am so impressed by this man's vocal stylings; words can not express. This debut is a must have! I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of "Emotional" because the first single and video really pulled me in. The more I delved into the other songs, the more I enjoyed it. The lyrics are ocean deep and he spans all the emotions of being in love. These are serious love songs for those who know and appreciate real masters of their crafts. The performance piece by Malik Yusef was a wonderful and unique surprise. Very deep! I loved that . Carl Thomas has a voice that is truly one of a kind. To even try to compare him to an artist out today would be an insult to him and his listeners. Exceptional tracks: "My Valentine" "Hey Now" "Lady Lay Your Body Down" "You Aint Right" "Giving You All My Love" and of course "I Wish". Actually they are ALL great! I have to say that I wished the songs were longer. Just when they get good, the fade comes. (ie: "My Valentine" & "I Wish") When real SANGIN'is involved, ya just don't want the song to end. Carl. You are truly blessed with a voice sent from God. Keep singing & continued success. You have definitely made and "Emotional" impact on the industry and a supporter out of me. CLB.

Carl Thomas "Emotional" is TIGHT!,

I disagree with Rickey Wright. The BEST part of this album is that Puffy is nowhere on there. This CD is definitely for cats who like to listen to good music without all the overdone machismo ("baby, I can do this and that...") and unneccesary rap(pers). He speaks words a man or woman in touch with their "emotions" could only understand. If all you like is sex-you-up, rub-you-down, kick-you-out, pimp tunes, you may be dissapointed. I've listened to this CD about 25 times and I haven't grown tired yet. I bought David Hollister's "Ghetto Hymns" shortly afterwards and didn't get that same feeling I got after hearing "Emotional".From a musician stand point, his voice, his falsettos and the background vocals all go together with the music. Even though the samples could have been more HIDDEN, he still comes off tight over the beats. The Biggie beat in "Woke Up..." kinda fooled me the first few listens. I'll admit I know Carl Thomas through a family member so you know I had to buy the album just see what he sounded like and to listen to it with a very critical ear ...and I haven't been disappointed yet. If you don't have it, try it and buy it. If you have it, enjoy it! -Ken J.

Impressive,
This review is from: Emotional (Audio CD)
This was an impressive debut by Carl Thomas, to say the least. His voice is smooth and he has an excellent range. This album is perfect for relaxation and at the same, you listen to a "top notch" vocalist. Cuts from the album like, "Giving You All My Love," "Emotional" and "Summer Rain" demonstrate Carl's ability to sing in a tone that goes perfect with the music. It's a shame there are quite a few samples on the album, mostly because "P. Diddy" produced it, but Carl makes each and every song his own. Cuts like, "Come to Me" and "Supastar" sound like classic R&B cuts from the 70s that display Carl's impressive vocal range. This is one of my favorite R&B albums of all time and a must have for any true R&B fan.

Carl Thomas the future for Bad Boy Entertainment,
By Marvymarv (Greensboro, NC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Emotional (Audio CD)
It's the future for Sean Puffy Comb's Bad Boy Entertainment and the future for nEo-SouL. Definitely one of the best R&B cds released in 2000. Maybe that's why the released date was moved up which is unheard of. This cd just keeps finding a way into my changer. Things that I like most about this cd are: 1. Unique sound. Not over-produced by cliques that have 5 other artists sounding the same. 2. Slow mover. At least 3 to 4 songs could be released as singles. I think Summer Rain is on the Shaft soundtrack. 3. Talent, need I say anymore. Faves are: 3. I Wish 8. Woke Up In The Morning 12. You Ain't Right 13. Lady Lay Your Body 15. Summer Rain

Love is the only Emotion,
By "korporatethugg" (Brooklyn, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Emotional (Audio CD)
"I'm emotional.." sings Carl Thomas, "...and I can't let go..." an interesting dichotomy and a theme that repeats itself throughout the album.Carl's world works in a simple arrangement: giving love, receiving love and losing love. These are not unique or unprecedented ideas. In fact, if you go through your old R&B or soul collections and pull out your Sam Cooke, Isley Brothers, Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross or Stevie Wonder (all of whom are evoked on this album) you can get many lessons on these. However, what Carl Thomas manages to do, like Mary J. Blige before him, is put it on a street level, or a more accesible level, so that even the homey on the street can relate. Carl exposes himself, heart and soul, shows his vulnerabilites and makes it seem as cool as a new pair of Timberlands to do so. This is a Bad Boy production, although you would never know it. There are some samples, but not an over-abundance of them. And while the album has a hip-hop feel to it, it is a more mature hip-hop sound- laid back...easy like Sunday morning. The rhythms are smooth and Carl is a vocalist of noticable talent (smooth and strong all at once) whose voice conveys a longing, a wanting (think of a more classy and cultured Keith Sweat). This is a romance album. So get your incense, your candles and wine and let the grooves take you over.

Just what I was looking for!!,
By C. T. (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Emotional (Audio CD)
I know I'm kinda late, but I was a little penny-pincher at the time this was released. I'm glad I waited though, 'cause I need this album much more now than I did then.First of all, I love Carl's voce... that's what made me pick the album up in the first place...This man's voice is amazing and very emotional... sometimes it seems like he's singing with more than his vocal chords. Secondly, the production is very smooth, slick and layed-back. With the exception of the sexy "Summer Rain," there isn't much here to get your feet movin'... unless it's one on one, but the songs will move you in other ways... and who needs another party song anyway? Thirdly, the lyrics; though most cover commer ground (love, break-ups, why'd you leave?), they seem like they're actually his feelings (they should since he wrote or co-wrote 95% of the album). And, what do you expect from an album called "Emotional," anyway? This is what I think of the tracks... "Intro": It's nice to see someone start off their album by giving thanks to the lord. "Emotional": This song is beatifully sung, written and produced. It's a great title track that gives you an idea of what you're in for. Definately a standound on the album. ***** "I Wish": The first single that got everyone listening. It's a great song that's very catchy and interesting. But after hearing the rest of the album, I can see that he could've done more vocally. **** 1/2 "Anything" (interlude): Nothing special, just an interlude. "My Valentine": Very interesting. I like it. **** 1/2 "Giving You All My Love": Definately has my repeat button working hard. I don't know if it's his voice or what, but I'm feelin' this one alot. It was co-written by Kelly Price (among others) and you can hear her singing background. Seriously, I don't pay much attention to what he's saying in this one... it's how he's saying it. ***** "Cadillac Rap" (interlude): This one made me laugh... that's about it. "Woke Up in the Morning": I like it, but it's not the best though. **** "Come To Me": I like it alot. I've had this one on repeat before, but it's not my favorite. **** "Cold, Cold World": Another standout. The beat is hot, especially in the beginning! Another one on repeat. ***** "Trouble Won't Last" (interlude): At first listen, I didn't know what the heck he was trying to say and it would crack me up, but after several listens, it's starting to make sense. It's interesting. "You Ain't Right": The tables get turned on this one ... his woman's not doing right. If you don't like the male-bashing going on, then you'll feel this song. Even though he's complaining, he seems like his sincerely upset with his woman... he's not just bashing her. I wouldn't do that to you Carl... what was she thinking? :-) **** 1/2 "Lady Lay Your Body": Pretty average lyrically, but his voice saves the day, again. I've repeated this one too. **** "Supastar": I love this one. Nice to hear some beautiful lyrics to his lady, even though she did him wrong... or maybe she didn't play him yet. Either way, it's beutiful. ***** "Summer Rain": A major reason why I decided to pick up this album. This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. It features a sample from Stevie Wonder's "Summer Soft." It has an island feel to it that'll get you movin' and his voice is just so amazing. The lyrics are really good, too. This song was worth the price of the whole album for me. ********** "Hey Now": OOOOH! I like this song waaaaaaay too much! His voice makes this song as he stretches notes for miles! The lyrics are really nice and the production is really slow, but it still manages to hit hard. ***** "Special Lady": I didn't like this one much at first, but it grew on me. It wasn't as emotional as the other ones, but it's a great song. **** That's it! This cd was well worth my time. It's not the same ol' "baby, baby, baby" cd and it's not the same ol' party cd, either. Carl has a beautiful voice, pretty good writing skills and he seems to have respect for his women, as well as himself. He's not talking about picking up women or about how much "bling" he has and he comes off as a respectable man whos' been through some very emotional stuff in his relationships. It seems like Bad Boy does really well with debut's... I just hope he comes just as strong with his follow up (if he has one). Faith's didn't fly, but I'll keep the faith with Carl and I'll definately be there to pick up the sophomore effort. 5 stars. P.S.: Even my mom likes this cd... that's scary! 5+++ |
