It All Makes Sense Now, July 20, 2009
This review is from: Emotional Exorcism: Expelling the Four Psychological Demons That Make Us Backslide (Hardcover)
As an ordinary person trying to make sense of my own behavior and that of others, I have never come across a book that puts our demons in simple enough terms that I understand them. And when I say simple, I don't mean condescening. Reading this book, I felt as if I was having an intelligent conversation with the author. No big words, no mystifying concepts...but me and my baffling friends and family on every page. Not only did I identify our behaviors, but I learned what could be done to correct my own and live a more emotionally healthy life. And to be more tolerant of others. If you're not afraid to look in the mirror and gently confront your demons and understand how they control you, and then kiss them goodbye, this is the book for you.

Emotional Exorcism: Expelling the Four Psychological Demons That Make Us Backslide, September 7, 2009
This review is from: Emotional Exorcism: Expelling the Four Psychological Demons That Make Us Backslide (Hardcover)
Having worked with patients' "inner demons" for over 30 years in psychiatric hospitals, addiction treatment settings, and with Christian religious communities, Dr. Hunt's new book is both unique and brilliant. She has been able to identify in a universally understood language not only "the problem" but "the solutions". These solutions and the paradigm shift that accompanies them are practical, concrete and surprisingly simple, albeit not easy. This is not just another "self-help" book reworking the same tired formulas. She uses language anyone, professional or lay, can use and understand. Her courage in broaching a spiritual realm in a psychological world is remarkable since few are able to do so without the risk of appearing "unscientific" or unrealistic. She incorporates recent research to back up her discussions of various aspects of what we take for granted as true or false. Citing the various religious traditions of the world and their attempts at dealing with the afflicting demons, she shows how we are dealing with essentially the same things. Dr. Hunt brings it all together. Addressing the traditional and latest psychological views and their flaws, with this concept of "exorcising", she distinguishes her work with personal responsibility with what is realistic in a non shame-based fashion. Using stories from her own patients' lives as their therapist and her observations, she helps illustrate her concepts and progress. Patients and therapist alike, we share these universally human ailments. I would challenge anyone who reads this book to be able to not find some hope for conquering their"inner demons".

Better Than the Usual Self-Helps, May 9, 2010
This review is from: Emotional Exorcism: Expelling the Four Psychological Demons That Make Us Backslide (Hardcover)
I sent a friend to read my review of this book and she said it wasn't here, so I'm actually writing my review a second time. This book is good enough that I want to take the extra time to tell people - again! I read Dr. Hunt's work and then introduced it to my staff. I've personally watched employees of mine effective change their attitude and behavior by using the easy methods suggested in Emotional Exorcism. By using the demon model we can stop blaming ourselves for recurrent destructive habits, and in doing so stop those cycles and feel better immediately. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a better understanding of how and why they think, act, and make choices in ways that aren't always for the best outcomes. Don't let your Blocker Demon stop you from buying and using this text!

At last, a practical concise guide to uncovering and successfully dealing with ones emotional issues., June 5, 2010
This review is from: Emotional Exorcism: Expelling the Four Psychological Demons That Make Us Backslide (Hardcover)
After reading a handful of books over the years in search of simple answers to not-so-simple personal issues, I found Dr. Hunt's book to really hit the mark. Previous books on the subject had left me asking more questions and never really gave me the tools that I was seeking. Emotional Exorcism is written in a refreshing style that engages the reader from the very beginning, while gently revealing to the reader specific areas which need attention, thus allowing you to discover and work on your own specific issues through the books' unique style and delivery. I loved the storytelling aspect of the book as it relates examples of several characters dealing with a number of their own issues, many of which I could relate to. This really helped me to focus-in and begin immediately to work on my own specific issues while helping me to realize that I am not alone in my struggles. I have benefitted so much and have witnessed such positive changes in my life as a result of not only reading through this wonderful book, but I continue to revisit different sections as needed, so, the "guide" aspect of the book has been invaluable for me. I have enthusiastically recommended Emotional Exorcism to many of my friends and loved ones and will continue to do so, as I know that so many of us are in need of real, practical solutions.
