I read this book back in my 20's and have reread it several times since then. I can only say that it put so many things into perspective. It has also helped me understand people around me and gave me the courage to take a lot of risks in my life. It's not a quick fix to make you happy, but the philosophy of this book does instruct on how to live with unhappiness and make better choices that can lead to happiness.

i read this book shortly after i started ACA many years ago and it really was a godsend. it opened my eyes to how the whole family affects us and how the children take on various roles such as the hero, the scapegoat, the lost child, the mascot, etc. i realized my problems weren't all self-created but from a dysfunctional family system at play. the book isn't just for adult children of alcoholics but anyone from a dysfunctional family as i was.
