Academically sound - but not textbook quality. Understandably written - but not masterfully written. The title of the book only represented one-third of the content (I was hoping for something more practical). Good overview, yet a single author covering the same material would eliminate some of the inherent difficulties of a multi-author compilation.

This is one of the best books on emotional intelligence around. It covers a wide range of topics in a way that is easy to understand. I really liked the sections on relationships. I thought the workplace chapters were particularly interesting. Finally, one chapter provides an excellent critical review of current EI measures

People thirsty for the meaning and usefulness of the concept "emotional intelligence"(EI)are tempted to uncritically accept whatever sounds good, generalize it to any situation that suits them, and subsequently feel confident they have acheived THE answers. EI is a relatively new concept and like all behavioral constructs it requires decades of thoughtful research, analysis, and criticism to tease-out its broad meanings and applicability. If you want quick, certain, and easily applicable answers about EI, do not read this book. It examines EI in a thoughtful, analytical, and (to this writer)objective way within the uncertainty of a behavioral science framework. While the authors make their biases clear, they update theories of EI, measurement instruments, and areas of application. As the second edition was published in 2006, you can be sure much has occurred and is in the pipeline that would modify some topics and conclusions presented. However, the authors (as the senior author emailed me recently) have no plan for a third edition, so if you want a thoughtful and readable presentation of a highly complex and fascinating concept I recommend this book be high on your list. I am neither a researcher nor an expert on this topic, but EI in Everyday Life is the source I use to become informed on the subject.
