The RCA years,
By
This review is from: Emotions (Audio CD)
Juice first emerged in the mid-seventies as the lead singer of Silver Spur, a folk-rock group who recorded some music for RCA that failed to make an impact. Juice had her biggest successes as a pop-country singer for Capitol in the early eighties before returning to record more albums for RCA in the mid-eighties, during which time she had three number one country hits. Her Capitol music can be found elsewhere, especially on Greatest hits and more, but this compilation covers both Juice's periods with RCA.
The three country number one hits included here are Both to each other (a duet with Eddie Rabbitt), Hurt (a cover of the Timi Yuro classic) and You want me to make you mine. Several covers apart from Hurt can be found here, among them being Slip away (Clarence Carter), Stuck in the middle with you (Stealer's wheel) and Emotions (Brenda Lee). There are plenty of other great songs including Tell me true, Old flame, Roll on truckers and Let your woman take care of you. If you enjoy Juice's Capitol music, you will surely enjoy this too, but if you haven't got any of her music, go for the Capitol stuff first. Good as it is, nothing here quite matches Queen of hearts, Angel of the morning, Break it to me gently or The sweetest thing - the big four Capitol classics.

This collection covers most of Juice Newton's hits for the RCA label. The #1 country hits "Hurt," "You Make Me Want To Make You Mine" and "Both To Each Other" are included, as well as Top 10 hits "Cheap Love," Tell Me True," "Old Flame" and "A Little Love." While all the material from Newton's terrific 1989 RCA album is completely ignored, there are several good tracks from her first two albums from the mid-70s, such as "Sailor Song" and "Good Time To Say Goodbye."
The music on this CD ranges from pure country ("'Til You Cry) to hard-edged pop ("Easy Way Out"), and most of the songs are pretty terrific--the only exception being "Roll On, Truckers," a song that has some guy singing the lead and Newton performing background vocal duties. (Wouldn't the neglected Top 10 hit "What Can I Do With My Heart" have been a better track to include?) Overall, this is a great CD, and a terrific supplement to the 1987 CD "Juice Newton's Greatest Hits (and more)". |
