The most frustating thing about Helio Delmiro is the fact that, for some reason, he hasn't cut that many records by himself. I think he prefers to back up people the likes of Ella Fitzgerald.
He is one of the best guitar players Brazil has produced, being able to jump from jazz to samba without any effort. His trade mark chords are unforgetable. Pure genius.
I strongly recommend all of his records.

5.0 out of 5 stars O melhor lugar do jazz brasileiro, February 16, 2005
This review is from: Emotiva: Odeon 100 Anos 3 (Audio CD)
I usually encounter the "Unhelpful vote admiration society" when I say again what I will now attempt, and this, that the USA recording industry ignores almost completely the Brasilian style of jazz musics, and in general improvised sounds known in Brasil as Música Instrumental Brasiliera . (I know , thank you to the "World Musics" fenomena that there is a surge of entusiasm for Brasilian sounds, but SO many wonderful musicians are still "in the margins" , except for those "in the know" who ae aware of these masters!
This recording, FINALLY reissued on a CD (I wore my disc out!) , graces of the wonderful efforts of Brasil's Charles Gavin demonstrates the virtuosity on both violão and guitarra elétrica of one of the legends of Brasil's guitar tradition.

A famous sideman (Elis Regina, Dóris Monteiro, Tamba Trio, and so many more, even US artistas the great Sara Vaughn and Michael Franks), Hélinho demonstrates his imagination and incredibly personal frasing in his solos, including recording time worn standards here given new vitality and freshness from his incredible lines , as Thelonius Monk's "Epistrophy" and the classic Strayhorn, "Body and Soul". "body.." is no easy composition to reinvent melody from, but this rendition a thing of beauty!

His own compositions are in the modal jazz tradition, with even a hint of Chick Corea type composition ("Pro Zeca"), and the too brief opening interlude "Marceneiro Paulo", (which if I remember, is dedicated to his papa) is a lovely composition on solo violão, picked in that tradition that is unique as Brasilian! Breathtaking!
The backing quarteto also features another legend, Jota Morães on vibrafone and piano, a first rate improvisor also.

I recommend his other recordings also, both the ones avaliable on Amazon, and if lucky, to find his Brasilian releases also.
Never a disappointing moment, although my only wish was that Hélinho chose his instrument of choice as the Gibson 175, I do not like the tone from the Gretch guitars he seems to favor, but his musics transcend the "limitations" of that brand name, HAHA!

100000 stars, brigadão mestre!
