Product Description

Now, reference-quality performance is available at a price that won't break your budget. Emotiva Pro's all-new Stealth DC-1 provides an accurate, transparent window on your work, coupled with exceptional convenience features that make it the ideal preamp and control center for your analog and digital workflow. The Stealth DC-1 uses dual independent AD1955 differential D/A converters, each operated in their highest quality internal differential monaural mode, for the lowest possible noise and distortion, followed by professional-grade LM4562 op-amps in the analog section for maximum fidelity. An advanced switchable asynchronous sample rate converter (ASRC) re-clocks the data at the same sample rate as the incoming signal, to dramatically reduce jitter. You'll hear what your source really sounds like. Built on high-quality 4-layer FR4 PC boards, using the highest quality parts, including an oversized toroidal power supply with multiple stages of linear regulation, the Stealth DC-1 offers measured and sonic performance that exceeds DACs costing several times more. The Emotiva Pro Stealth DC-1 gives you a full range of pro-grade inputs, including galvanically isolated AES/EBU (XLR), Toslink (optical), Coax S/PDIF (RCA), and BNC S/PDIF digital inputs, and a high performance asynchronous USB input. All digital inputs support the complete range of sample rates and bit depths, from 16/44.1 to 24/192, including 24/88 and 24/176.4. The Stealth DC-1 also has one stereo line level analog input; perfect for connecting an external analog line-level source. As a reference-quality DAC, the DC-1 includes full balanced differential XLR outputs, as well as RCA single-ended outputs. As you'd expect, the XLR outputs are +6dB relative to the single-ended outputs, for full compatibility with your other professional equipment.

What a well made product and the sound is extremely clean.

The DC-1 needs to warm up to sound it's best, but once at temp the sound is very detailed with a deep soundstage.

I use the DC-1 to play my collection of FLAC music files, as well as streams and podcasts.

I got the emotiva Stealth DC-1 a few weeks ago, and recently got to compare it to a Bryston BDA-1. Even with the stealth at a slightly lower volume, it actually sounded clearer and more true to life by a noticeable margin. This was through ATC speakers which display any flaw in the audio chain very clearly. The emotiva has performed flawlessly, and I am confident now that its performance meets and exceeds much more expensive, highly rated components. Even better is the fact that a preamp is not needed, unlike with the bryston, as volume control is implemented with precise and ultra low distortion resistor ladder chips. Overall this is a fantastic unit which can save you money, and allow you to listen to the music without worrying about the quality of your source.

My goal is to convert my music collection from physical CD's to FLAC files that I could play using XMBC on a PC - so I needed a DAC. After looking at several I chose the Emotiva based on good reviews, build quality and price. I must say I'm not disappointed. The DAC sounds very good, better than my CD player (Krell KAV-300cd). I have a reasonably good system consisting of a Krell KRC-3 preamp, a Krell KAV-250 amp and Apogee duetta signature speakers. The DC-1 needs to warm up to sound it's best, but once at temp the sound is very detailed with a deep soundstage. Although I don't have a lot of experience with other brands, this one sounds very good to me. I'm sure there are better DACs out there but for the price point around $500 I doubt that any other brand could possibly be better.

The DC-1 uses dual Analog Devices AD1955 multi-bit delta-sigma DACs. Basically, AD1955 is a 1-bit dac with smooth and easy listening SQ. It is a safe bet for Emotiva to adopt the AD1955 in their new DC-1. While most 1-bit dacs sound good, it is not as revealing as a true 32-bit dac in extreme micro dynamic which requires careful circuitry implementation to avoid unbalanced and bright sound. But that is not the case with the DC-1. I am glad that the DC-1 has achieved more than 90% the SQ of a well implemented true 32-bit dac at an affordable price. Highly recommended.

What a well made product and the sound is extremely clean. It works flawlessly with either my MacBook Air or my Windows Vista laptop. I run TOSLINK out of my CD player and this DAC allows me to listen or record. It has extremely detailed sound without being shrill. It is dead quiet when it should be and all of the functions and menus are intuitive and easy to use. I really like the OLED front display, which is dimmable in 5 levels. The remote is very substantial...the first time you hold an Emotiva die-cast metal remote, you think "wow". Quality all the way here.

A DAC that defies that spending allot of money, says you get a superior DAC. Well the DC-1 says you are in for a surprise.

Highlights of the DC-1

Fully balanced, and differential input, and output stages. Because being truly balanced, you have one stage manage the primary wave form, and another 180 degrees out, and once they are summed, any noise or distortion is cancelled out per the rule of common mode noise cancellation.

This means incredible dynamics. Exceptionally quiet noise floor. At the price of the DC-1, this quality is amazing. No other DAC can boast this quality. AES/EBU, USB, Optical/Toslink, and Coaxial Digital inputs are included. Tiff Analog RCA input/output connections are included. As are Balanced Output connections.

The Volume control is an expensive true, resistor ladder converter volume control, for the best tracking accuracy, and superior linearity.

Large I/V toroidal power supply with isolated, and segmented power supplies for the various stages right down to the OLED display.

A nice chunky half rack size 1RU tall chassis. A Rack mount kit is available from Emotiva Professional for install in your studio with no troubles.

Sound quality is as honest as you could get. Very open with no coloration I could hear. No Euphony as in some tube gear, so if this kind of sound is what you seek, the DC-1 is NOT for you. Instead, it has incredible detail. It will tell you how your EQ, and other aspects of your recording are as you mix/ master.

Or you may listen to a favorite recording and get all the Nuances, and detail as the artist intended. You will note that no oversampling is ever employed. Also with the Analog Devices AD1955 DACs, its low level detail, and linearity are simply great.

I first bought DC-1 for a system (Adam F5 + SVS SP1000) I built around my computer. The whole system sounded great. Since I also do some vocal recording, I later changed my mind and wanted to try Motu Track 16. Bought it and AB-ed with DC-1. Motu actually sounded great also with warmth. But it lacked the super clearity that DC-1 has, and the headroom (dynamics) is much inferior to DC-1 (dont get me wrong. Motu 16 is better than other interfaces in these two cat in its price range IMO). In addition, the Motu sounding is not as forward as DC-1 (which you may like or hate). When connected with computer using a regular USB 2 cable, Motu could only play at 48K while DC-1 could at 192K. I dont know if this had anything to do with the super clearity of DC-1 or not (my source was only 44.1K). Another big advantage of DC-1 is its driver. It is very easy to install and very very stable. I never had any problem with it. While the Motu driver is a real PITA. Furthermore, DC-1 does not use the break-out cables (as in other interfaces, which I dislike), and it has a REALLY NICE remote. In the end, I decided to continue using my old recording gears (presonus system), returned Motu and kept Emotiva. I have listened to many DACs and computer recording interfaces. IMHO, the quality of D/A in DC-1 is way better than that in other computer interfaces in its price range. If you dont need the recording capability in other interfaces (Track 16, Baby face, Duo, Forte, etc), look no further (at sub-$1000 range).
