Book Description

All she wanted was to disappear…

Claire Martin is an empath. She’s lived her entire life as a slave to a constant barrage of emotions that weren't hers. Editorial Reviews

I thought this novel was fantastic, (it) had everything in one great package.  It kept me turning the pages from the front to the end...  (the) characters are very well written and you find yourself wishing they were real...

Currently, HK is a mother, wife and aspiring black belt in Karate as well as an avid dressage rider with the cutest teddy bear of a horse in existence. Her three dogs, a Doberman puppy and two ancient Doxies keep her busy when she is not writing or working.

HK has been an editor for several newsletters over the years, her favorite being for Heifer International where her ideas were put into effect and complimented by those on high. Currently her editing skills have been focused on her friends and clients in the writing world.

Paranormal and science fiction are favorite genres and the possibilities we have not yet fully realized. Her favorite premise: ''what if?''

I wanted to read a story about an empath, and this book popped up. I started reading it without having read the book description, and that was a good thing! The way the supernatural elements developed in the beginning of the book was fascinating. The story deserves 4 stars, however the grammatical errors (I mention in my last paragraph) were annoying, and the Kindle version had garbled text. I didn't want to dock the story's essence due to grammar and what was probably a source file to ebook conversion error.

The hardest part about reading this Kindle version was the garbled sentences. Here is an example taken from Loc 835 of 4040 in the Kindle version. This is the paragraph at the bottom of the page that continues to the next page. (I read mine in the Kindle app on the iPad.)

Nodding, I agreed and struggled to my feet. me with his hand out as I walked to the door. pleased to have met you and look forward to working with you. You are a friend to us. We will protect you as a member of our clan, I swear it." His words were formal and heavy with meaning, and I found reassuring even if I didn't fully understand what was behind them.
Troy stopped "Claire, I am

You can see that the ' Troy stopped ' part should begin the second sentence, but it shows as a new line after the whole paragraph. The ' "Claire, I am ' part should begin the third sentence.

Most of the time I could decipher the meaning of the paragraphs that get garbled, but some would take minutes to figure out. Maybe it was a source file error that converting to ebook couldn't get right?

As a last note, I have a few grammatical pet peeves, and this book hits two of them.

2.0 out of 5 stars High expectations but book didn't deliver.. April 29, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book does a good job of drawing the reader in with enigmatic characterization and a mix of new elements in the beginning chapters. You grow with Clair's character as she slowly sheds her timidness. Sadly, the love affair with the book ends quickly. The story progresses in odd jumps that are not fluid and don't progress naturally. In addition, it seems like the author ran out of steam towards the end as it was haphazardly finished. I really enjoyed the general story line but it wasn't enough to convince me to read the second in the series. Lastly, not related to writing, the formatting of the Kindle edition of this book was in a nonstandard format that detracted from the reading experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended - without hesitation! May 21, 2011
Claire is no ordinary human. With abilities that have cornered her in social isolation, she has accepted that she will never be "normal". It's not until she meets Stephen that Claire learns that she is not alone in her talents. The excitement begins when Stephen introduces Claire into a world that she believed were that of legend and movie, a world where vampires and wares exist and live among her, a world with James.

The Authors attention to detail allows the reader to feel a part of the story as it unfolds. I felt the emotions that Claire and James were sharing and it made me more invested in the story. An intense mixture of passion, fear and confusion that Claire endured made me want to reach out to her in a way that makes HK Savage a fantastic writer.

As a more recent fan of the paranormal, I found it to be a breath of fresh air from the typical vampire story. From its dangerous turns to the unique bonds built between Claire and James, Empath left me completely anticipating the next book in the Trilogy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Twilight Knock-Off **SPOILER ALERT!** August 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story started off promisingly: a girl with powers she can't explain or control. She befriends a boy whose family agrees to help her, oh and they're a family of were-cats. The were-cats introduce her to some vampires- one of which she becomes immediately infatuated with and then a few pages later- is now deeply in love with. There's an invading clan of vampires. The girl and her vampire beau must go before an ancient vampire council. Sound familiar???!!! So we have were-cats instead of werewolves, infatuation bordering on obsession, a vampire council underneath an old city- in this case Edinburgh instead of whatever Italian city was in Twilight, and a girl who seems to lose her personality to this bizarre relationship with the vampire; wow, haven't read this before! You can basically predict everything in the book if you have any knowledge of the Twilight series at all.
Besides the obvious similarities to Twilight (which I wasn't a huge fan of either), there is little to no character development. The reader doesn't even really get a chance to know this girl before she's suddenly madly in love with the humanized vampire (gets blood from a blood bank rather than feeding from humans). The were-cat family plays a big role in the plot, but you don't really get to know them either.
The writing style could have definitely used some editing. I do have to admit that I think it was slightly better written than the Twilight books...just slightly. I was disappointed in this story all around.
If you want to read a good paranormal series, look into Jenny Pox by J L Bryan(available on Kindle)- those books were amazing!

More About the Author

HK lives in the frozen hinterlands of the far North. The long, cold months provide ample opportunity to hunker down with her computer and create adventures far more enticing than scraping ice and getting frostbite.

Between books HK reads voraciously. Anything with a good plot and compelling characters are her broad parameters. One is as likely to catch her with a copy of Don Quixote as with the latest Kristen Ashley.

When not writing or wowing the corporate world by day, HK practices martial arts, plays with her dogs and matches wits with her teen. Next winter she intends to brush up on her Spanish and escape the cold for somewhere more tropical.
