5.0 out of 5 stars Groovy!
This album truly displays Sting's strengths, and I appreciate the fact that all the songs from the former version of the movie "Kingdom of the Sun" are included. Kingdom of the Sun was the first version of the movie which Sting wrote five songs to. Disney revamped the entire film, scratching the five songs, and making it into a buddy comedy. Its good to see that...

2.0 out of 5 stars Emperor needs a new groove
All I have to say is - why? Why did Disney feel the need to release a soundtrack to a film with only 2 songs in it? I got it! To cash in on the dupes like me who buy all the soundtracks! I guess it wouldn't be a big deal having songs written for but not included in the film - if the songs were any good. It's clear that Disney was trying to do something very diferent...

4.0 out of 5 stars Bravo, Disney!, November 18, 2000
By

This review is from: Emperor's New Groove (2000 Film) (Blisterpack) (Audio CD)
Disney has always been tricky when it comes to soundtracks: first the characters sing (like in Little Mermaid, Aladin, etc) or their new approach being that someone else sings for the characters (like Phil Collins and Tarzan). The Emperor's New Groove sort-of combines these two elements to form a very well put-together album. I went into this album thinking that Sting would be pulling a Phil Collins and singing all the songs in the movie. This was not the case, however. Sting is a wonderful singer, but an even better songwriter; Disney definitely must have seen this because he writes and produces every single song on this album. What would any "groove" be like without the illustrius Tom Jones? It's been a LONG time since he's done anything new, and he definitely gives a very groovy sense to the opening and reprise songs of "Perfect World". Eartha Kitt purrs and growls her way through her character's song "Snuff Out the Light", and Sting, as he always does, manages to write and sing the theme song "My Funny Friend and Me" which definitely promotes the concept of how friendship can change a view on life. Rascal Flatts are featured in "Walk the Lama Lama", a cute yet quarky litttle song about lamas, and Sting appears again with Shawn Colvin singing the duet "One Day She'll Love Me". Last but definitely not least is the tremendously brilliant score written and produced by John Debney, which provides somewhat of a sneak-peak as to what the movie is about. Although it may not be the best soundtrack Disney's ever done, it should definitely be considered one of the best. From the magnificent and moving score by John Debney, to Sting's extraordinary songwriting and singing abilities, each gives a tremendous amount of energy and talent to the album itself. The Emperor's New Groove is not only a wonderful soundtrack; it gives a significant amount of promise to the film and will, undoutably, bring a well-deserved boost to the movie through it's run at the theatre.

I have to be honest, I wasn't expecting anything good aboutEmperor's New Groove. Then I got the Cd and realized that Sting wrotegreat songs for the film. I like the sound of all the songs. There ismore, I just got the spanish version of the soundtrack and it is greattoo, the Walk the llama llama song is even better in this CD, it evenhas some extra lyrics that the english version doesn'tinclude. .... The title in spanish is even better "Las Locurasdel Emperador" which means something like "The Emperor'sFrolics"

5.0 out of 5 stars Sting has Stung., November 30, 2000

This is certainly another memorable addition to the Disney music family!! The songs all have their own unique flavor and the perfect touch of sophistication that Sting seems to bring to all his music. I am quite disappointed, however, that there are three songs from the CD not included in the final film - they're really great!! I would've loved to see them animated - especially "One Day She'll Love Me". It's not at all the typical Disney love song, but instead very sophisticated and moody. Perhaps they can be included in a special edition? :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great CD based on original movie premise, August 19, 2003

(REAL NAME)
This CD is great, the Sting songs are, as to be expected, wonderful, especially the ones he sings. It is unfortunate though that this CD has very little in common with the movie as it was released. The movie was originally intended to be a serious drama, based on the "Prince and the Pauper" storyline, but it apparently didn't work, so Disney rushed to change it into a buddy-comedy. I guess the timeline to get the revised movie into theaters didn't allow for them to make significant changes to the soundtrack, because songs that support the original story (Disney was to call the movie "Empire of the Sun") still appear on the soundtrack, even though they have absolutely nothing to do with the movie as released.

All that having been said, this is a truly enjoyable soundtrack/score combination.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crystal clear scores, excellent songs, but a bit lacking..., May 12, 2001
By A Customer
Looking back on my first review, I would like to make some modifications and change my ratings.

While the songs are excellent and the scores are good, the scores lack some of the scenes and cues from the movie itself which I desired to listen to; particulary the opening sequence.

Otherwise, the Sting songs; in fact all of the songs (save the annoying "Lamma Lamma") are great and the score is mostly lively, yet still somewhat lacking.

In short, the New Groove soundtrack is good, but there are definately better pieces with the advent of the Atlantis and Shrek scores, both of which are avaliable at Amazon.

4.0 out of 5 stars definitely "groove"-y!, November 21, 2000
the rhythms are bouncy, the songs are catchy and fun, though not nearly as fun as the best of ashman/menken... sigh; as if that will ever happen again. but there's a funkiness to the synchopations that both phil collins and elton john could only hope to achieve.

while the score works well, having not seen the film yet, i am saddened to read on the back that one of the catchiest tunes, the suprisingly well-performed eartha kitt song "snuff out the light," is, according to the note on the back of the cd, "written for but not used in the film." the other two are "walk the llama llama" and "one day she'll love me." the sting/shawn colvin exclusion comes as little surprise since the film has undergone serious revision in the attempt to make it less serious, apparently losing the "love" angle. but the other two are certainly silly enough to be in the final cut, one would venture after hearing them. ultimately, what we have is a soundtrack with only two original songs--tom jones' opening number (and its reprise) and the sting oscar-hopeful buddy song--that will actually be in the film as we see it.

i'm excited about seeing this movie; i truly am. but i long for a return, at least briefly, to the musicals of the past...real musicals, not the voice-over tarzan-type features.

but, back to the cd at hand... regardless of what is in the film or not, what is on the cd is bouncy and fun. i love it, and my four 1/2 year old and two 1/2 year old are getting funky on the first listen!

i love dreamworks, and even 20th century fox has potential, but disney does, you have to admit, do this very well!
