Book Description

4 and up
Virginia Lee Burton has added her own irrepressible humor in pictures and design to the tale children have loved for centuries. The Emperor, his court, and clothes -- or lack of them -- are ridiculous as only Hans Christian Andersen can make them. The whole is a delightful concoction.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Colorful pictures portray the classic story. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 4-When Andersen's vain emperor and his court are decked out in the fashions of 16th-century France, including the monarch in his underwear, the result is a particularly uproarious version of this well-loved classic. In her cartoonlike watercolors, Tharlet uses light, bright pastel tones for the clothing of everyone except the charlatan tailors, who are clad in sober brown and gray. Among the many small pictorial additions that extend the text's humor are the emperor's teddy bear, lying beside him as his breakfast-in-bed arrives, and a little dog with fleas that appears on several pages. The story is retold in simple, straightforward sentences. This fresh, delightful interpretation would be a good choice for reading alone or aloud.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Way To Read With Your Child, September 29, 1999
By A Customer
The format of this book and the others like them give a young reader a very enjoyable experience. The adult side helps to embellish the story but the children's side lets a new reader be part of the story not just a listener. Our first grader takes great pride in his part of the book and seems to have better comprehension. These are a great find.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice story, nice illustrations - one nude scene, though, September 1, 2010
This review is from: Emperor's New Clothes (Paperback)
Among the many great stories collected by Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) is the story of The Emperor's New Clothes. This wonderful book is a translation of Andersen's story, rounded out with bright and colorful and yet realistic illustrations. My little one really liked the story - especially the picture of the naked emperor walking away from the viewer. (Although I must admit that I was less than thrilled with that picture!) Be aware of that one picture, but other than that it's a great book.
